Earthquake in Ecuador

A magnitude 6.8 earthquake that struck southern Ecuador over the weekend left at least 15 people dead and at least 380 injured.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake’s epicenter was off the Pacific Coast about 50 miles south of Guayaquil, Ecuador’s second-largest city. One of the victims was in Peru while the 14 others lost their lives in Ecuador. According to Ecuador’s presidential communications agency, at least 44 homes were destroyed while 90 more were damaged. Around 50 educational buildings and more than 30 health centers were also affected, and multiple roadways were blocked by landslides that the earthquake caused.

This weekend’s earthquake is the strongest to hit Ecuador since 2016, when over 650 people perished and over 16K were injured in a magnitude 7.8 quake that was centered offshore about 17 miles from the town of Muisne.

Frozen strawberries recall

Frozen organic strawberries sold at stores including Costco, Aldi, and Trader Joe’s have been recalled in the U.S. over a potential link to an outbreak of hepatitis A infections.

In a statement, the FDA said that the brands involved in the recall are Simply Nature, Vital Choice, Kirkland Signature, Made With, PCC Community Markets, and Trader Joe’s. The two companies that have issued voluntary recalls are California Splendor and Scenic Fruit Company. There have been five cases of Hepatitis A associated with the outbreak reported in Washington state since March 13th. All those people reported eating frozen organic strawberries, per the CDC, which said it determined that farms in Baja California, Mexico were the “likely source of this outbreak.”

Per the FDA, hepatitis A illness “usually occurs within 15 to 50 days after eating or drinking contaminated food or water,” and people may feel symptoms such as fatigue, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, jaundice, dark urine, and pale stool.

UBS & Credit Suisse

UBS Group yesterday agreed to acquire Credit Suisse for over $3B in an all-stock deal that Swiss regulators facilitated to restore trust in the banking system, according to multiple reports.

The offer from UBS is about 60% less than Credit Suisse’s market value as of Friday afternoon. As part of the deal terms, Credit Suisse shareholders will receive 1 UBS share for every 22.48 Credit Suisse shares they hold. Swiss regulators reportedly aimed to fast-track the deal before markets opened today. As an alternative to the UBS takeover, Swiss authorities were also reportedly considering full or partial nationalization of the bank.

Credit Suisse is one of the banks seen as “too big to fail,” with any deal potentially affecting global markets. The deal comes less than two weeks after the second and third-largest bank failures in U.S. history (Silicon Valley and Signature). Last week, Credit Suisse shares (NYSE: CS) saw their worst weekly decline since March 2020, losing a quarter of their value.
