Top TipsSudan truce collapsesAir strikes hit the capital of Khartoum yesterday despite a truce that Sudan’s military and the rival paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) entered into to allow civilians to flee. Sudan’s military claimed responsibility for the strikes. Prior to the attack, both warring parties agreed to extend the formal ceasefire agreement—which was due to expire at midnight last night—for another three days. Sudan’s RSF said the decision to extend the ceasefire by 72 hours was “in response to international, regional, and local calls,” and both parties have accused each other of violating the agreement. The conflict erupted on April 15th between Sudan’s army and its RSF paramilitary force. More than 500 deaths have been reported, though the true number of casualties is estimated to be higher. Authorities and former Sudanese politicians have said that if the fighting continues, it could thrust the country into a civil war. |

NFL draft wrapThe 2023 NFL Draft wrapped up on Saturday after kicking off with round one on Thursday evening. Alabama QB Bryce Young was chosen by the Carolina Panthers as the top pick, and the Houston Texans landed QB CJ Stroud (Ohio State) and outside linebacker Will Anderson Jr. (Alabama) as the second and third picks of the first round. Florida QB Anthony Richardson went to the Indianapolis Colts as the fourth pick, and with the fifth pick, the Seattle Seahawks scooped up Illinois cornerback Devon Witherspoon. While Kentucky QB Will Levis was expected to be selected in the first round, the Tennessee Titans traded up to select him in the second round with the No. 33 overall pick of the draft. This year’s Mr. Irrelevant–the name given to the player picked last in the draft–went to Toledo defensive end Desjuan Johnson, whom the Los Angeles Rams selected. |

New chess championChinese grandmaster Ding Liren became the 17th world champion after beating Russia’s Ian Nepomniachtchi in the 2023 World Chess Championship. Liren bested Nepomniachtchi in a final rapid tiebreak game after they faced off against one another in 14 longer “classical” games over the course of three weeks at the St. Regis Hotel in Astana, Kazakhstan. The pair were tied 7-7 going into yesterday’s rapid match. Speaking on his victory, Ding said, “This match reflects the deepness of my soul. I could not control my mood. I will cry. I will burst into tears. It was quite a tough tournament for me. I feel quite relieved.” Ding is the first world champion since No. 1-ranked Magnus Carlsen gave up his title last year, citing a lack of motivation. With Ding’s triumph, China holds both the men's and women’s world titles, with current women’s champion Ju Wenjun set to defend her title against fellow Chinese player Lei Tingjie in July. |
