House passes debt ceiling bill

A deal to suspend the U.S. government’s $31.4T debt ceiling passed in the House last night and now heads to the Senate.

Lawmakers have been working to avert a first-ever default ahead of June 5th, the date the U.S. Treasury has said it will no longer be able to pay all of the nation’s obligations in full and on time. The House first voted 241-187 during the afternoon to pass the rule governing floor debate on the measure, setting it up for the final vote which was held last night. The final vote ended with a tally of 314-117.

The deal would reportedly raise the U.S. debt ceiling for two years. Nonmilitary discretionary spending would stay flat in fiscal year 2024, with a 1% increase in 2025. Military spending would increase by 3% in 2024. The deal would also reinstate student debt payments and the accrual of interest starting on August 30th.

Pence expected to run

Former Vice President Mike Pence is set to announce his run for the White House next week in Iowa, per multiple reports.

Pence’s announcement will reportedly take place on June 7th ahead of a CNN town hall which Pence will participate in later that evening at Grand View University in Des Moines. Before being tapped to be Trump’s vice president in the 2016 election, Pence served as Indiana governor and as a former U.S. congressman, including holding a position as the House Republican Conference chair.

When Pence officially declares, he will join a field that includes former President Donald Trump, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, SC Senator Tim Scott, former AR Governor Asa Hutchinson, and biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy. Reports also surfaced yesterday that former NJ Governor Chris Christie is expected to announce his Republican candidacy for president next Tuesday in New Hampshire.

NASA UFO meeting

The first public meeting of a NASA panel studying what the government calls “unidentified aerial phenomena,” commonly known as UFOs, took place yesterday to discuss what the panel has found since it formed last year.

NASA formed the “independent study group” of 16 members in June 2022 in order to study data related to unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP), a term that encompasses objects or occurrences in the sky, underwater, or in space that can’t be immediately identified. Yesterday’s four-hour-long meeting was the first time the group has discussed the results of its UAP investigation in public.

While the group disclosed that it investigated “about 800 events over about 27 years,” David Spergel–the chair of the team–said that “we need better data.” Other members of the group including former astronaut Scott Kelly said there are additional “unusual” incidents that should be investigated further, but maintained there is nothing definitive to say on whether extraterrestrial life exists.
