Top TipsWildfire smoke hits USASmoke moving south from Canadian wildfires blocked out the sun and reduced visibility over parts of the United States yesterday, with similar conditions expected today. More than 55M people across the Northeast, Midwest, and mid-Atlantic were under air quality alerts yesterday, with New York experiencing the worst air quality in its recorded history. There, the Federal Aviation Administration implemented a ground stop for flights bound for LaGuardia airport due to smoke. The FAA added that the smoke haze lingering over the Northeast from the Canadian wildfires could also delay flights through Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C. Per Canada’s Minister of Emergency Preparedness, Bill Blair, a total of 414 fires are still active in the country, 239 of which are deemed out of control. Approximately 9.4M acres of land have burned in the fires, and over 20K people are still evacuated from their homes. |

Chris Licht exits CNNCNN CEO Chris Licht left the company after 13 months, according to David Zaslav, chief executive of parent company Warner Bros. Discovery. Licht’s departure comes five days after the publication of a profile piece on him in The Atlantic, in which author Tim Alberta spoke to more than 100 CNN employees and called into question Licht’s ability to lead the organization into the future. The day before the story was published, Warner Bros. Discovery executive David Leavy was named chief operating officer of CNN. Licht joined CNN in May 2022 after the network’s then-parent company WarnerMedia merged with Discovery. He replaced longtime network boss Jeff Zucker, who resigned in the wake of a relationship with a longtime senior colleague that he failed to disclose. Zaslav announced that the “acting leadership team” to fill Licht’s position will consist of talent boss Amy Entelis, editorial head Virginia Moseley, and programming chief Eric Sherling. |

Kilauea erupts againKilauea, the second-largest volcano in Hawaii, began erupting yesterday after a three-month pause, according to U.S. Geological Survey officials. In a statement, the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said that it detected a glow in Kilauea’s summit webcam images which indicated that an “eruption had commenced” at around 4:44 AM HST yesterday morning. Before issuing the eruption notice, the observatory said increased earthquake activity and changes in the patterns of ground deformation at Kilauea’s summit began occurring on Tuesday night. Per Hawaiian officials, the eruption is happening in an area closed to the public and confined within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Kilauea is one of the world’s most active volcanoes and erupted from September 2021 until last December. For about two weeks in December, Mauna Loa–Hawaii’s biggest volcano–was also erupting on Hawaii’s Big Island. Kilauea began erupting again in January of this year, and that eruption lasted 61 days. |
