Drone strike on ISIL leader

The U.S. military said that it successfully carried out a drone strike targeting a leader of the Islamic State (ISIL) group in eastern Syria on Friday.

In a press release published yesterday, the U.S. Central Command said Friday’s strike resulted in the death of ISIL leader Usamah al-Muhajir. The agency added that no civilians lost their lives, though they were “assessing reports of a civilian injury.” Russian military planes reportedly engaged with the drones a day before the strike. According to Air Force Lieutenant General Alexus Grynkewich, the planes “dropped flares in front of the drones and flew dangerously close, endangering the safety of all aircraft involved.”

At its peak in 2014, ISIL controlled nearly one-third of Iraq and Syria. The U.S. has roughly 1K troops deployed in Syria as part of international efforts to combat ISIL, which maintains hideouts in remote desert areas and conducts frequent attacks.

Yellen goes to China

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen visited Beijing and said her trip marked a “step forward” in efforts to stabilize relations between the U.S. and China.

Yellen is the second Biden administration official to visit the country in the last several weeks. Last month, Secretary of State Antony Blinken visited and met with Chinese President Xi Jinping and other officials in Beijing. At the end of her trip, Yellen said that conversations with her counterparts were “direct, substantive, and productive.” Per Yellen, the talks covered issues such as economic ties between the countries, national security, climate initiatives, and global debt challenges.

In terms of GDP, the U.S. and China represent the world’s two largest economies. On top of trade disputes, current issues dividing the countries include this year’s incursion of a Chinese spy balloon over the U.S., human rights in Xinjiang and Hong Kong, and territorial claims to Taiwan and the South China Sea.

Elton John says goodbye

Sir Elton John gave his final performance of his "Farewell Yellow Brick Road" tour in Stockholm, Sweden, on Saturday night, announcing that he would not be touring again.

The "Farewell Yellow Brick Road" tour began in 2018 but was delayed for two years during the Covid-19 pandemic. The singer performed 330 shows for over 6.25M people throughout the tour’s run. It is also the first tour ever to earn more than $900M. In 2021, John said in an interview that he was looking forward to retiring from touring to focus on his two children, a sentiment he echoed in his farewell performance.

Over his nearly 50-year career, John, 76, received five Grammys and recorded 31 studio albums. His albums have sold more than 300M units, making him one of the best-selling musicians of all time. While he has decided to stop touring, he confirmed that he will continue to create new music.
