Jacksonville shooting

Three people were killed Saturday in an attack that appeared to be racially motivated when a gunman targeted Black people at a Dollar General store in Jacksonville, Florida.

At a news conference held by Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters, the police identified Ryan Christoper Palmeter, 21, as the shooter who killed two men and one woman before taking his own life. According to Sheriff Waters, Palmeter was armed with an AR-15-style rifle and a handgun. Waters showed photos of the weapons, which showed swastikas drawn on one of the guns. Palmeter approached the first victim in her car and shot her through the window before he walked into the store and opened fire.

Following the attack, Palmeter’s father went into his room and found a suicide note, a will, and writings on his laptop that Waters described as racially-charged. The police reported that Palmeter was also involved in a 2016 domestic violence incident and had been involuntarily committed to a mental hospital for examination.

Gang targets Haiti protests

At least seven people lost their lives in Haiti when a gang that controls a suburb of Port-au-Prince opened fire on a church-organized protest.

Videos on social media showed people marching in Canaan, a makeshift town founded by survivors of the 2010 earthquake. Some of the protesters donned yellow shirts associated with the religious group led by Marcorel “Marco” Zidor, while some were seen carrying sticks and machetes. The protest was held in opposition to the gang that controls the area, which warned last week that it planned to shut down the last remaining open road connecting Haiti’s capital to the northern regions of the country.

Gang violence in Haiti has claimed more than 2.4K lives so far this year. Gangs have grown more powerful since the July 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moise, and they are estimated to control up to 80% of Port-au-Prince.
