Biden addresses the nation

President Joe Biden urged the public to stand with Ukraine and Israel in an address yesterday, which previewed a request to Congress for more aid to both nations.

Last night’s address was Biden’s second speech from the Oval Office as commander-in-chief, where he announced that today he will send Congress an "urgent budget request." The president plans to request more than $100B in emergency funding from Congress for wars in Israel and Ukraine, U.S. border security, and other international crises. Any funding request has to pass the Senate and the House, which has been without a speaker for more than two weeks.

Biden's speech comes on the heels of his visit to Tel Aviv earlier this week, where he showed solidarity with Israel in its war against Hamas and pushed for more humanitarian assistance to Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. Ahead of his address, Biden also spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to reemphasize his commitment to backing Kyiv.

Sidney Powell enters plea deal

Attorney Sidney Powell has pleaded guilty to six charges in the Georgia election interference case, becoming the second defendant in the case to reach a deal with prosecutors.

Powell, who was charged alongside Former President Trump and 17 others with allegedly violating the state’s anti-racketeering law, entered a plea just a day before jury selection was set to start in her trial. Powell faced charges of conspiracy to commit intentional interference of election duties. As part of the deal, she will serve six years of probation, will be fined $6K, and will have to write an apology letter to Georgia and its residents. She has also agreed to testify against her co-defendants.

Trial dates have not been set for the 16 remaining defendants, including former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who was a Trump lawyer, and Mark Meadows, who was the Trump White House’s chief of staff. The trial for attorney Kenneth Chesebro is set to begin today with jury selection.

Starbucks and union file dueling suits

Starbucks and the union representing the coffee company's organized workers have filed dueling lawsuits over a social media post about the Israel-Hamas war.

The Seattle-based chain sued Workers United in federal court in Iowa, claiming that a pro-Palestinian post from a union account angered customers and damaged its reputation. Starbucks is suing for trademark infringement, demanding that Workers United stop using the name “Starbucks Workers United” for the group. The company also wants the union to stop using a circular green logo that resembles Starbucks’ logo. In the lawsuit, Starbucks claims that more than 1K people sent in complaints regarding the social media post.

Starbucks Workers United has been operating under that name since August 2021. Since then, at least 366 U.S. Starbucks have voted to unionize. The group has responded with its own filing, asking a federal court to rule that it can continue to use Starbucks’ name and a similar logo.
