Top TipsAdm. Lisa Franchetti to lead the NavyThe Senate bypassed Senator Tommy Tuberville's blockade of senior military promotions yesterday to confirm Admiral Lisa Franchetti to be the highest-ranking officer of the U.S. Navy. Franchetti is now the first woman to serve as the chief of naval operations and the first female member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. She previously headed the U.S. 6th Fleet and U.S. Naval Forces Korea. The Senate confirmed her 95-1. Franchetti was one of three senior military leaders confirmed yesterday. The Senate also approved General David Allvin as chief of staff of the U.S. Air Force and promoted Lieutenant General Christopher Mahoney to serve as assistant commandant for the U.S. Marine Corps. The confirmations come less than 24 hours after several of Tuberville's colleagues took to the Senate floor for five hours to urge him to lift his months-long hold on military promotions. The Alabama senator is protesting a Pentagon abortion policy that pays troops for travel to obtain abortions. |

Sam Bankman-Fried found guiltySam Bankman-Fried, who once ran the world's second largest cryptocurrency exchange, has been found guilty of fraud. Bankman-Fried, a co-founder of the digital currency exchange FTX, was charged with seven counts of wire fraud, securities fraud and money laundering that swindled customers of FTX and lenders to its affiliated hedge fund, Alameda Research. He is accused of stealing at least $10B from customer and investors. Last December, Bankman-Fried was arrested in the Bahamas and extradited to the United States, where he was freed on a $250M personal recognizance bond. He has pleaded not guilty to all the charges, maintaining that, while he had made mistakes, he had acted in good faith. Judge Lewis Kaplan set Bankman-Fried's sentencing for March 28, 2024. He faces up to 110 years in prison, although he is likely to recieve less time. Bankman-Fried has a second trial on four additional charges slated for earlier that month. |

Beatles release final songMore than 50 years after the Beatles broke up, John, Paul, George, and Ringo are back together, reunited for one final track that was released yesterday. “Now and Then” comes from the same batch of unreleased demos written by Lennon in the 1970s, which were given to his former bandmates by Yoko Ono. They used the tape to construct the songs “Free As a Bird” and “Real Love,” released in the mid-1990s, but there were technical limitations to finishing “Now and Then.” It was only using machine learning technology, that the band was able to isolate Lennon’s voice from the original cassette and complete the song. The song's release comes more than four decades since Lennon’s murder and two since George Harrison’s death. "Now and Then" is being released as a double A-side single along with the band's first single "Love Me Do," which debuted to an unsuspecting British public in 1962. |
