January inflation report

Inflation as measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose by 6.4% in January compared to last year and 0.5% from the month prior, per a report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

According to the Labor Bureau’s report, energy prices rose 8.7% year-over-year, and the index for food rose 10.1% from January 2022 levels. Other categories that saw price increases in the 30 days between December and January include gasoline (+2.4%), apparel (+0.8%), and rent (+0.7%). “Core” inflation–which removes the food and energy components of the report–increased by 5.6% compared to the same period last year, and rose 0.4% in January after rising 0.3% in December.

Last month’s 6.4% annualized rise in the CPI marks a decline of 2.1% from its July 2022 level, which saw an annualized increase of 8.5% from July 2021. Price categories that decreased in January are airline fares (-2.1%), used cars and trucks (-1.9%), and medical care services (-0.7%).

East Palestine fallout

One week after evacuation orders were lifted for residents of East Palestine, Ohio, the EPA revealed that there were more chemicals aboard the Norfolk Southern train that derailed on February 3rd than originally reported.

Per new EPA documents, there were other carcinogenic chemicals on board in addition to butyl acrylate and vinyl chloride (used for making PVC plastic found in pipes, car parts, and more). The train cars reportedly also contained glycol monobutyl ether, ethylhexyl acrylate, and isobutylene. Ethylhexyl acrylate can cause headaches, nausea, and respiratory problems in people exposed to it, according to the CDC, while isobutylene exposure can make people dizzy and drowsy.

While the EPA said it hasn’t detected any “levels of concern” of substances released in the crash and controlled detonation of the derailed cars on February 6th, the agency said in a letter to Norfolk Southern that trace amounts of the chemicals aboard the train have been identified in the Ohio River and surrounding creeks. East Palestine is set to hold an emergency council meeting today to respond to residents’ concerns.

Louis Vuitton taps Pharrell

Louis Vuitton has named Pharrell Williams its next creative director of menswear, the brand confirmed yesterday.

The musician and entrepreneur will be Louis Vuitton’s first permanent head of menswear since Virgil Abloh passed away in 2021, after which the brand remained without a permanent creative or artistic director for 2022. In a statement, Louis Vuitton’s Chairman and CEO Pietro Beccari said that Williams’ “creative vision beyond fashion will undoubtedly lead Louis Vuitton towards a new and very exciting chapter,” adding that his first collection “will be revealed next June during Men’s Fashion Week in Paris.”

Williams rose to prominence in the late 1990s/early 2000s as one-half of the music production duo the Neptunes, along with Chad Hugo. In addition to his music career, he oversees two fashion brands and a skincare line. He has also collaborated with luxury houses such as Chanel, for whom he designed a collection and became the brand’s first male fashion ambassador.

The Police were right

Sting may have been singing to ‘Roxanne’ back in 1981, but in 2023, we all could benefit if we “Put on the red light.”

Two different waveforms called red light and near-infrared light are both healing to the body. One is absorbed by surface tissues and cells, leading to optimized skin health, while the other (near-infrared) is invisible to the human eye, yet penetrates deeper into tissues for recovery and inflammation support.

Get the benefits of both with Joovv’s patented, medical-grade red light therapy device. Tip News readers get a big $50 savings by using code “Tip” at checkout.
