Your Daily Brief

March 3rd, 2022

Good morning, and happy Friday! This week, Ford filed a patent for a system that could remotely repossess a car…or, in layman’s terms, a car that will drive away from you by itself if you miss any installments. It’s a wild world. As long as no one’s patenting a system to repossess apartments for late rent, we’re good!

Blinken & Lavrov meet at G20

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov spoke with one another yesterday on the sidelines of the G20 summit of foreign ministers in New Delhi, India.

Reports of Blinken’s encounter with his Russian counterpart come from a senior State Department official and marks the first time the two have spoken in person since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022. At a news conference, Blinken said he told Lavrov that the U.S. would support Ukraine “for as long as it takes” and would push for a diplomatic end to the conflict. He reportedly also urged Russia to rejoin the New START nuclear arms treaty and release imprisoned American Paul Whelan.

Lavrov, meanwhile, told reporters at the summit that Moscow would continue its actions in Ukraine. He also said that Russia remains open to talks on ending the conflict, but accused the West of blocking such talks.

Alex Murdaugh found guilty

A jury yesterday found Alex Murdaugh guilty of murder in the shooting deaths of his wife and son that took place on June 7th, 2021.

Jurors convicted the 54-year-old former South Carolina attorney on two counts of murder and two counts of using a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. Taking the stand in his own defense, Murdaugh admitted to lying about his whereabouts on the evening his wife Maggie and son Paul were killed but insisted he didn’t kill them. While Murdaugh told police he wasn’t present at the kennels on the night of their deaths, a video on Paul Murdaugh’s phone led witnesses to testify that Alex was present at the kennels where his wife and son were shot five minutes before officials believe the crime occurred.

For each murder conviction, Murdaugh faces a sentence of 30 years to life in prison. His sentencing is set for 9:30 AM ET this morning.

Giza pyramid discovery

A hidden corridor measuring roughly 30 feet long has been discovered close to the main entrance of the Great Pyramid of Giza, according to Egyptian antiquities officials.

Scientists found the sealed-off corridor on the northern side of the pyramid. The discovery was made under the Scan Pyramids project which has been using non-invasive tech including infrared thermography, 3D simulations, and cosmic-ray imaging to peer inside the structure since 2015. In 2017, another sealed-off corridor measuring 98 feet was found inside the same pyramid.

Egypt’s Great Pyramid–the last of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World still standing–was erected as a monumental tomb around 2560 BC during Pharaoh Khufu’s reign, and its construction remains a mystery to archeologists. According to an article published in Nature, “any discovery of previously-unknown internal structures could contribute to the knowledge” of how the pyramid was built.

Dinner with a side of chemicals?

You’ve heard of Teflon®, the ‘miracle’ non-stick synthetic chemical, which became popular in the 1960s for its ‘slick’ ability to repel other substances. But did you know it’s one of the most dangerous chemicals allowed in consumer products? And it’s still found in over 95% of non-stick cookware on the market! When it gets to very high temperatures, Teflon® releases toxic fumes at a molecular level.

Enter – Caraway Home. Caraway set out to build non-stick, ceramic-coated cookware that’s actually safe for you to use. Whether you’re a weeknight chef looking to amplify your meals, or making a healthy swap to protect your loved ones from harmful emissions, Caraway is built for function, longevity, and safety.
