Americans found in Mexico

Two of the four Americans kidnapped in Mexico on Friday were found alive while the other two were found dead.

The state of the four individuals who were kidnapped was confirmed by Tamaulipas Governor Americo Villarreal on a phone call with Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador that was played during a news conference. After crossing into the Mexican state of Tamaulipas from Brownsville, Texas, their minivan was attacked by a group of armed men, who shot at it before dragging the four individuals out and loading them into a truck.

The four Americans–identified as Latavia McGee, Shaheed Woodard, Zindell Brown, and Eric James Williams–reportedly traveled to Mexico for McGee to get cosmetic surgery, and the two survivors were taken to Texas yesterday (it is unclear which of the four survived). Tamaulipas is one of six Mexican states that the U.S. advises Americans to avoid visiting, citing crime and kidnapping.

JetBlue & Spirit merger

The Department of Justice yesterday filed an antitrust lawsuit to block the merger between JetBlue Airways and Spirit Airlines.

Per Attorney General Merrick Garland, the $3.8B deal–which would create the nation’s fifth-largest carrier–would hinder Spirit’s ability to create lower fares in markets served by larger airlines. Therefore, the DOJ argues that passengers would face higher fares and fewer choices. Before the announcement, JetBlue published a press release stating that it is “over 3x as effective at lowering legacy carrier nonstop fares than Spirit” and that the two airlines “primarily compete with other carriers” and not each other.

JetBlue launched a bid for Spirit in May 2022 and urged Spirit’s shareholders to rebuff a deal to merge with Frontier Airlines. In October 2022, Spirit’s shareholders approved the JetBlue merger after the Frontier deal fell apart. JetBlue’s takeover bid includes a $400M break-up fee that would be dispersed to Spirit shareholders if regulators block the deal.

Battle of Bakhmut updates

Western officials said yesterday that between 20K and 30K Russian troops have been killed and wounded in the battle for the Ukrainian city of Bakhmut since it began last summer.

Referring to Bakhmut as the Soviet-era name of “Artyomovsk,” Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said yesterday during televised remarks that capturing the town would enable Russian forces to push further into Ukraine and seize more ground in the country’s Donbas region. The same day, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that he and Ukraine’s other senior leaders “unanimously supported” continuing to defend the city

Yevgeny Prigozhin–the head of Russia’s Wagner mercenary group which has been spearheading Russia’s offensive in Bakhmut –said on Friday that his forces had the city “practically surrounded.” However, Prigozhin said yesterday that he needed Russia’s regular army to supply his group with more ammunition, reinforcements, and cover support in order to secure a victory.
