DOJ Louisville investigation

The Justice Department announced that it found a pattern of civil rights violations in an investigation into law enforcement in Louisville, Kentucky that was launched following the 2020 shooting death of Breonna Taylor.

In a press conference, Attorney General Merrick Garland highlighted the DOJ’s findings, saying that “LMPD engaged in a pattern of practice of conduct that violates the first and fourth amendments of the Constitution.” Garland also said that the report found that LMPD uses excessive force, conducts searches based on invalid warrants, unlawfully executes warrants without knocking and announcing, and added that LMPD “unlawfully discriminates against Black people in its enforcement activities.”

Per Garland, LMPD and the city government have agreed to resolve violations identified in the DOJ’s review through a court-enforceable decree. The DOJ’s report also states that, since 2020, Louisville has banned no-knock warrants, expanded community violence prevention efforts, and sought to support health and wellness for officers.

Greece train crash protests

An estimated 60K people protested in Greece yesterday after authorities released audio in which a train driver involved in a February 28th crash was told to ignore a red light.

Yesterday’s protests coincided with a 24-hour strike called by infrastructure and transport workers, which disrupted travel across the country. Rail employees in the country, meanwhile, have staged rolling, 24-hour strikes since last week, arguing that the declining state of Greece’s rail network is due to understaffing and underinvestment amid a years-long debt crisis.

The protests are in connection to events last Tuesday when a passenger train carrying more than 350 people collided head-on with a freight train near the city of Larissa. As of last night, the death toll from the crash sits at 57. Another 48 people remain hospitalized with six reportedly in critical condition. In terms of casualties, the incident is the deadliest train crash in Greece’s history.

Women in Afghanistan

The United Nations yesterday declared Afghanistan to be the most repressive country in the world for women and girls since the Taliban returned to power in August 2021.

In a statement released to coincide with International Women’s Day, the UN said it is “renewing its call on the country’s de facto authorities to halt and reverse harsh restrictions on the fundamental rights of women and girls.” Roza Otunbayeva, Special Representative of the Secretary-General and head of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan, added that the Taliban’s crackdown on women’s rights “will further isolate Afghanistan from its citizens and the rest of the world.”

This week, Afghan universities reopened with only men allowed to attend. Since the Taliban regained control, women have been banned from public parks and gyms, and from receiving education beyond the sixth grade. Women are also barred from working at national and international nongovernmental organizations and ordered to cover themselves from head to toe.
