Your Daily Brief

March 13th, 2023

Good morning, and happy Monday! Have you ever seen a team score more than 30 runs during a baseball game? Chances are you probably haven’t…but that’s exactly what happened this weekend when the University of New Orleans piled on a total of 35 runs against Mississippi Valley State University. If you were only looking at the score, you might guess the game was football instead of baseball!

In Today’s Brief

  • France: Adopts pension reform
  • San Diego: Boats capsize off coast

Prisoner swap claim

The U.S. State Department yesterday denied claims made by Iran’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Hossein Amirabdollahian that the two countries had come to an agreement on a prisoner exchange.

Amirabdollahian reportedly delivered the remarks on Iranian state television, saying that the deal had been in place since last March and that “if everything goes well on the U.S. side, I think we will witness a prisoner exchange in a short period.” Following reports of Amirabdollahian’s claims, U.S. State Department spokesman Ned Price dismissed them as a “cruel lie” and said the U.S. is “working relentlessly to secure the release of the three wrongfully detained Americans in Iran.”

Several U.S. citizens are currently in Iranian custody, held on charges including espionage. Siamak Namazi, Emad Shargi, and Morad Tahbaz are the three Americans whom the State Department referred to; all three have dual American-Iranian citizenship.

Aramco breaks records

Saudi Arabian oil company Aramco yesterday announced record earnings of $161.1B for 2022, representing a 46.5% increase compared with the year before.

During a quarterly call, Aramco CEO Amin Nasser said it was “probably the highest net income ever recorded in the corporate world.” Separately, the company said in a statement that its results were “underpinned by stronger crude oil prices, higher volumes sold, and improved margins for refined products.” The majority of Aramco’s shares are owned by the government of Saudi Arabia, which is the OPEC oil cartel’s biggest producer.

Along with non-OPEC countries like Russia, Saudi Arabia also leads the OPEC+ alliance, which has curbed global production to buoy prices.

Oscars roundup

The 95th Oscars hosted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences took place last night in Los Angeles, CA.

Jimmy Kimmel moderated the ceremony, which was broadcast from the Dolby Theatre. A24’s Everything Everywhere All At Once led the nominations with 11 nods and took home seven statues, including best picture, best original screenplay, and best director (Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert). Brendan Fraser and Michelle Yeoh earned their first Oscars, taking home best actor and best actress for The Whale and Everything Everywhere All At Once, respectively. For their work in the latter film, Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis earned best supporting actor and actress; it is both their first Oscar.

The Oscars have experienced declining viewership over the past decade, with 2021 drawing an all-time low audience of 10.4M views. Last year, 15.36M people tuned in.
