Nashville school shooting

Three children and three adult staff members lost their lives in a shooting at a Nashville school yesterday.

In a tweet, Metro Nashville Police Department wrote: “An active shooter event has taken place at Covenant School, Covenant Presbyterian Church, on Burton Hills Dr. The shooter was engaged by MNPD and is dead.” Per local authorities, the shooter was later identified as Audrey Elizabeth Hale, a 28-year-old Nashville resident who reportedly identified as a transgender woman. Police say Hale entered the building through a side door before climbing stairs to the second floor, where the incident unfolded.

The Covenant School is a private Christian school in Nashville for preschool through 6th grade, per its website. According to data compiled by Education Week, there have been 13 school shootings this year in the U.S. in which at least one person was killed or injured.

Mass walkouts in Germany

Transport workers in Germany yesterday staged one of the largest walkouts in decades as unions demanded higher wages amid rising inflation.

The strike was called by the country’s Verdi service workers’ union and the EVG union, which represents rail workers. The walkout brought airports and bus and train stations to a standstill, with flights at eight of the country’s airports, including those in Munich, Frankfurt, and Hamburg, either canceled or delayed. According to estimates from the German Airports Association, around 380K air travelers were not able to take off yesterday.

Verdi is negotiating on behalf of around 2.5M employees in the public sector, including in public transport and at airports, while EVG negotiates for around 230K employees at Deutsche Bahn and bus companies. The unions’ demands for pay raises come as Germany–which is one of Europe’s biggest economies, in terms of GDP–saw an inflation rate of 9.3% in February.

Disney begins layoffs

Walt Disney Co has begun the 7K planned layoffs the company announced earlier this year, according to a letter CEO Bob Iger sent to employees.

Per Iger’s memo, a total of three rounds of job cuts are expected to take place before this summer, with a “second, larger round of notifications” set for April. According to sources familiar with the matter, several of the company’s divisions including Disney Entertainment, Disney Parks, Experiences and Products, and corporate will be impacted. ESPN employees reportedly won’t be affected by this week’s round of cuts, but the sports network is anticipated to be included in later rounds.

Disney lost over $120B of its market value in 2022 and isn’t the only entertainment company partaking in layoffs this year. Paramount Global, Comcast, Warner Bros. Discovery, and others have also implemented job cuts as a part of wider cost-reduction measures.
