Top TipsNarcan over the counterThe Food and Drug Administration yesterday approved the overdose-reversing drug Narcan to be sold without a prescription. Narcan–which is the brand name for the drug naxolone–is a nasal spray that can prevent overdoses by blocking the effects of opioids on the brain and restoring breathing. With the agency’s approval, the FDA said that Narcan could become the first opioid treatment drug to be sold over the counter (the FDA first approved Narcan nasal spray in 2015 as a prescription drug). Emergent BioSolutions, the drug’s manufacturer, said it will make Narcan available on shelves in the U.S. and at online retailers by late summer. The approval from the FDA comes as the U.S. grapples with rising levels of opioid-related deaths. According to data from the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the U.S. reported more than 106K deaths from overdoses in 2021, primarily driven by synthetic opioids such as illicit fentanyl. |

AI open letterNotable figures in artificial intelligence penned an open letter calling for companies in the sector to suspend training of AI systems at certain levels due to theoretical risks to humanity. Per the letter, which was published on the Future of Life Institute’s website, “AI systems with human-competitive intelligence can pose profound risks to society and humanity” and AI labs are currently “locked in an out-of-control race to develop and deploy ever more powerful digital minds that no one–not even their creators–can understand, predict, or reliably control.” The signatories added that they therefore “call on all AI labs to immediately pause for at least 6 months the training of AI systems more powerful than GPT-4.” GPT-4 is the technology that powers the AI chatbot ChatGPT developed by OpenAI. As of last night, the letter had been signed by over 1.2K individuals, some of whom have ties to the AI space, including Elon Musk and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak. |

Wooly mammoth meatballsA food startup unveiled a meatball made from flesh cultivated using the DNA of a wooly mammoth, despite the animal going extinct 4K years ago. Australian cultured meat company Vow unveiled the meatball at a science museum in the Netherlands. According to Vow, it was developed by joining sheep stem cells with the DNA sequence for mammoth myoglobin–a gene responsible for the meatball’s smell, color, and taste–and filling in gaps with African elephant DNA. Tim Noakesmith, one of Vow's co-founders, said they “chose the wooly mammoth because it’s a symbol of diversity loss and a symbol of climate change.” Since scientists weren’t sure how a person’s immune system would react, nobody has eaten the meatball yet. Vow is reportedly investigating the potential lab-grown use of other species such as alpacas, kangaroos, and various fish species. The company expects Japanese quail to be its first lab-grown meat served to customers in Singapore later this year. |

CBD superfood gummy, powered by beesHemp edibles have a dark secret: they're nearly all made with high-fructose corn syrup, artificial colors, and synthetic flavors. And no, adding 10mg of CBD to that isn't going to make it "healthy." That's why the Brothers decided to change the way things work in the hemp world. Meet the all-new Honey Drop! Honey Drops are made with simple ingredients, including certified organic honey sourced from small, remote sustainable farms + fruit pectin. Using ultra-low temperatures, the honey is processed to remove moisture and retain all the beneficial plant metabolites, pollen, and goodness of natural honey. Next, they're super-powered with immune loving superfoods. Currently, they offer two delicious flavors, Orange Turmeric and Lemon Ginger, both made with organic ingredients. The result is a chewy, delicious honey-based gummy with an estimated 25-30mg per gummy (15mg CBD, 7mg CBG, 7mg CBN). They're great on the go, before settling down for the night, or whenever you need a scrumptious treat that isn't laden with corn syrup.
