Trump arraignment

Court officials confirmed that former President Trump will be arraigned in a Manhattan courthouse on Tuesday afternoon following his indictment by District Attorney Alvin Bragg.

The arraignment is reportedly scheduled for 2:15 PM. According to a statement the former president posted yesterday, he will appear before Juan Manuel Merchan, acting justice for the New York County Supreme Court. The charges against Trump come after a years-long investigation into allegations that he violated campaign finance laws by reimbursing his former lawyer Michael Cohen for a $130K “hush money” payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels (real name Stephanie Clifford) to not speak about her relationship with Trump in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election.

Law enforcement officials said Trump is expected to fly to New York on Monday before surrendering to officials on Tuesday. With the indictment, Donald Trump is the first former U.S. president to face criminal charges in American history.

Italy bans ChatGPT

Regulators in Italy yesterday issued a temporary ban on AI chatbot ChatGPT due to privacy concerns, effective immediately.

Italy’s Privacy Guarantor ordered ChatGPT blocked over concerns that OpenAI–the chatbot’s parent company–is violating the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation through its data handling practices. Italy maintained that a breach at ChatGPT had been reported on March 20th, and argued that ChatGPT’s lack of age verification for users “exposes children to receiving responses that are absolutely inappropriate to their age and awareness.”

Italy’s temporary ban comes days after key figures in AI research including Elon Musk and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak wrote an open letter calling on the industry to “immediately pause for at least 6 months the training of AI systems more powerful than GPT-4,” which refers to the technology powering ChatGPT. Over 1.8K individuals signed the letter, arguing that AI can “pose profound risks to society and humanity.”

NCAA Final Four (corrected*)

Iowa and LSU will face off for the NCAA women’s basketball championship title tomorrow after the Final Four teams played last night at American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.

This year’s Final Four teams for the women’s tournament were LSU, Iowa, South Carolina, and Virginia Tech. Iowa’s Caitlin Clark scored 41 points in the team’s 77-73 victory over South Carolina, setting the record for the most points in a national semifinal game in men’s or women’s NCAA tournament history. Earlier in the night, LSU beat Virginia Tech with a final score of 79-72.

*Yesterday’s Daily Brief incorrectly mentioned the men's Final Four beginning last night. The men's Final Four will play tonight, Saturday, April 1st, featuring UConn, Florida Atlantic University, San Diego State University, and the University of Miami. The prevailing two teams will face off in the championship game Monday, April 3rd.
