South & Midwest storms

The death toll from storms that brought tornadoes to the South and Midwest regions of the United States rose over the weekend to at least 32 individuals, according to officials.

The storm system prompted at least 50 preliminary reports of tornadoes in states including Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Mississippi, and Tennessee. Home to 85M people, at least 900K homes and establishments were left without power after the storms began moving through the affected areas on Friday evening. In a White House press release published yesterday, President Biden declared a “major disaster” in Arkansas and “ordered Federal aid to supplement State and local recovery efforts.”

More storms are expected tomorrow in the same areas, with forecasters saying that over 45M people in a dozen states will be impacted by a “widespread severe weather threat” that will potentially include strong tornadoes, rain, and hail.

Train derailment in Montana

At least 25 cars derailed from a train in Paradise, Montana, yesterday and spilled contents into a nearby body of water.

The incident reportedly occurred near Highway 135 around 9:20 AM local time. According to first responders, the crash posed no threat to the public, but authorities hadn't confirmed what the derailed containers were carrying. Montana Rail Link–which owns the railroad–said in a statement that “there are no injuries, no risks to public safety, and no Hazmat release,” and added that the “cause of the derailment is currently under investigation.”

Train derailments have fallen under more scrutiny since the February derailment of a Norfolk Southern train carrying hazardous materials in East Palestine, Ohio. Last week, the Justice Department filed a lawsuit against Norfolk Southern on behalf of the EPA, accusing the company of violating the Clean Water Act, which prohibits entities from releasing toxic pollutants into waterways without a government permit.

NCAA basketball championships

The NCAA women’s basketball tournament ended last night after LSU clinched the national title in a 102-85 victory over Iowa.

LSU’s victory gives the school its first national championship in program history and gives coach Kim Mulkey titles with two teams (she previously earned titles for Baylor in 2005, 2012, and 2019). Jasmine Carson scored 22 points, and LSU set the record for the most points ever scored in a women’s national championship game. The night before, during the men’s Final Four matchup at NRG Stadium in Houston, UConn defeated Miami with a final score of 72-59. San Diego State, meanwhile, beat Florida Atlantic 72-71 after Lamont Butler scored a two-point shot at the buzzer.

The final men’s game will kick off tonight at 8:20 PM CT. UConn will compete for its fifth title against SDSU, which has previously never appeared in the NCAA championship.
