Your Daily Brief

April 5th, 2023

Good morning, and happy Wednesday! If you’re reading this email, chances are it’s on a smartphone. In that spirit, we’d like to point out that the very first cell phone call was made 50 years ago on a phone the size of a brick developed by Motorola engineer Martin Cooper. Now, these babies fit in our pockets and allow us to video chat with people on the other side of the world. Isn’t it wild to think of how far technology has come?

In Today’s Brief

  • Paris: Bans electric scooters
  • Kentucky: Methanol boat crash
  • Harry Potter: HBO series nears deal

Trump pleads not guilty

Former President Donald Trump surrendered to authorities in the Manhattan district attorney’s office yesterday and was arraigned.

Trump pleaded not guilty to 34 felony counts of falsifying business records following Manhattan D.A. Alvin Bragg’s investigation into the former president’s alleged role in a hush money payment made to Stormy Daniels (real name Stephanie Clifford) in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election. Yesterday's events mark the first time that a current or former U.S. president has been arrested and has faced criminal charges.

In a press conference at Mar-a-Lago last night, Trump said, “The only crime I have committed is to fearlessly defend our nation from those who seek to destroy it,” adding that “this fake case was brought on only to interfere with the upcoming 2024 election and it should be dropped immediately.”

An Ipsos poll taken this week shows that Trump’s lead has widened over rivals for the Republican party’s presidential nomination after reports emerged of his indictment. More than half of the poll’s respondents believe the charges brought against Trump are politically motivated.

Detained journalist in Russia

Lawyers for the jailed Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich visited him yesterday for the first time, according to reports from the newspaper.

The visitation comes nearly a week after Russian authorities detained Gershkovich and accused him of trying to obtain classified information in the interest of the U.S. government. The Journal’s editor-in-chief Emma Tucker said that Gershkovich was in good health and that she was “encouraged” the attorneys could meet with him. During a briefing yesterday afternoon, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said that Gershkovich’s case was a priority for President Biden, and called the charges “ridiculous.”

According to the Russian state news agency TASS, Gershkovich will be held in custody until May 29th. Gershkovich’s arrest marks the first time an American reporter has been arrested on espionage charges in Russia since the Cold War. If convicted, he could face up to 20 years in a Russian prison.

Baby Powder settlement

Johnson & Johnson has agreed to pay up to $8.9B over 25 years to settle lawsuits accusing the company of selling Baby Powder and other products that caused cancer.

The company faces about 60K claims from people who say that prolonged use of talcum powder (or “talc”)–which is the active ingredient in products such as Baby Powder and Shower to Shower–can cause ovarian cancer in some women. The claims also allege that talc powder can cause mesothelioma. In a press release announcing the settlement offer, Johnson & Johnson didn’t admit wrongdoing and maintained that its products containing talc powder are safe to use.

Juries have ruled against the company in similar suits in recent years, including a $4.69B verdict from 2018 involving 22 women who alleged their ovarian cancer was caused by using Johnson & Johnson’s powder as a part of their daily hygiene routine.

Depleted soil means depleted health

Modern agriculture has depleted minerals in our soils…and we suffer as a result.

In the peer-reviewed journal, The Crop Journal, researchers explained how often magnesium is overlooked in plants. They point out how roughly two-thirds of people are deficient in this critical nutrient.

But the bio-availability depends on the form you choose.

Most magnesium supplements are Mg Oxide, Mg Glycinate, or Mg Citrate...but they’ll never provide you with all the benefits of magnesium on their own. You need the most powerful, full-spectrum supplement with high-quality sources.

Magnesium Breakthrough from BiOptimizers contains not one, but seven high-quality forms of magnesium so you can experience its calming, energy-boosting effects.

Here's how you get all seven forms of magnesium to boost energy, and defeat stress, anxiety & burnout.

What most people don't know...

Magnesium oxide is not good for increasing overall magnesium levels. Plus, it won’t do a thing to reduce your anxiety — which is a big reason many of us are taking magnesium.

Worse, magnesium oxide has a laxative effect, which might send you running for the bathroom, and you may be wasting your money.

Glycinate and Citrate aren’t bad, but if you truly want to experience the benefits of magnesium – including more energy and less anxiety…

You need a full spectrum supplement like BiOptimizer’s Magnesium Breakthrough – the world’s most comprehensive array of 7 forms, so you get the results you’re after.
