Tennessee lawmakers expelled

The Tennessee House of Representatives voted to expel two of the state’s lawmakers for their roles in protests at the State Capitol last week.

Last Thursday, hundreds of demonstrators entered the Tennessee Capitol building four days after a shooting at the Nashville Covenant School claimed the lives of three 9-year-old children and three staff members. Three of the state’s lawmakers–Reps. Gloria Johnson, Justin Jones, and Justin Pearson–reportedly led protesters in chanting demands for stricter gun laws in the House chamber. While the lawmakers said taking part in the protest was within their First Amendment rights, House Speaker Cameron Sexton said their actions violated “several rules of decorum and procedure on the House floor.”

Reps. Justin Jones and Justin Pearson were removed from the body, while the vote to expel Rep. Gloria Johnson didn’t secure the majority needed. Before yesterday, the Tennessee House had expelled two lawmakers in the last 157 years.

French protests continue

Protests across France against President Emmanuel Macron’s pension reform with reports of clashes breaking out between demonstrators and police in cities including Lyon, Nantes, and Paris.

French citizens have taken part in protests since January against the reform, which lifts the country’s retirement age by two years to 64. After Macron pushed through the National Assembly without a vote with the aid of Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne on March 16th, protests escalated and drew in larger numbers. After talks between trade union leaders and Borne collapsed Wednesday, unions vowed to keep up their resistance and called for another day of nationwide protests on April 13th.

While strikers caused the Eiffel Tower to close, the Paris Metro reportedly ran with almost no disruptions yesterday, in contrast with previous days of action. According to the country’s Interior Ministry, a total of 570K people demonstrated against the pension reform yesterday, down from 740K one week earlier.

Sushi terrorism in Japan

Two men were arrested this week in Japan for allegedly contaminating a communal bowl of pickled ginger at a fast-food restaurant as part of a prank that has grown into what some in the country are referring to as “sushi terrorism.”

The men reportedly filmed themselves dipping the chopsticks they had been using in the ginger bowl at a Yoshinoya in Osaka, which the restaurant chain does not permit. The prank–which began as a trend that went viral on social media–involves people visiting Japan’s conveyor belt sushi restaurants, taking things off the belt, licking them, touching them, or smothering them in wasabi before returning the item to the belt for other diners to take.

Last month, police arrested three people for allegedly drinking soy sauce from the bottle and grabbing sushi by hand off a restaurant’s conveyor belt. Similar incidents have sparked debate that the nation’s conveyor belt sushi system and communal bowl restaurants may be outdated.
