Avalanches in the Alps

At least four people lost their lives in an avalanche in the French Alps yesterday, according to France’s Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin.

The avalanche occurred on the Armancette glacier in the country’s region, which is about 18 miles southwest of Chamonix. Emmanuel Coquand, the spokesperson for the local authorities of Haute-Savoie, said that the individuals who were caught in it were backcountry skiing in the mountains, and added that authorities were still confirming the identity of the four victims. A day earlier, nine skiers in Switzerland were airlifted to the hospital after an avalanche was triggered near the summit of Alphubel mountain by the country’s Zermatt ski resort.

Yesterday’s avalanche in the French Alps is one of the country’s deadliest in recent years. Since 2018, France has seen three avalanches that have caused the death of at least four people: one occurred in March 2018, while the other two took place in May 2021.

Masters tournament wraps

Spanish golfer Jon Rahm took home the trophy–and the green jacket–at the 87th Masters yesterday at the Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia.

Rahm’s victory came after he began the final round two shots behind Brooks Koepka, who has earned four major titles. The 28-year-old Spanish golfer previously captured the 2021 U.S. Open, making his victory yesterday his second major title. Rahm is now the fourth Spanish golfer to become a Masters champion, joining Sergio Garcia (2017), Jose Maria Olazabal (1994, 1999), and Seve Ballesteros (1980, 1983).

Rahm finished the tournament 12 under, four strokes over Kopeka (-8), who tied for second place with Phil Mickelson. It was Rahm’s fourth victory on the PGA Tour in 2023 so far. This year, he previously came in first place at the Sentry Tournament of Champions, The American Express Tournament, and the Genesis Invitational.

Last Nuremberg prosecutor dies

The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., confirmed that Benjamin Ferencz, the last surviving prosecutor from the Nuremberg trials, passed away Friday evening in Florida. He was 103.

Born in Transylvania in 1920, Ferencz immigrated as a boy with his parents to New York. After graduating from Harvard Law School, he fought in Europe during World War II, helping to liberate several concentration camps as a war crimes investigator before turning to the courtroom. At 27, Ferencz was named Chief Prosecutor for Nuremberg’s Einsatzgruppen trial–his first court case–in which he tried 22 former Nazi commanders for crimes against humanity. All the defendants were convicted.

The Nuremberg trials were a series of 13 trials held by the Allies in Nuremberg, Germany, after Germany was defeated in 1945. The defendants included Nazi Party officials and high-ranking military officers, along with German industrialists, doctors, and lawyers.
