Shootings in Louisville

Five people lost their lives yesterday and at least eight were hospitalized after a shooting at a bank in downtown Louisville, Kentucky.

The shooting occurred around 8:30 AM local time at a building near Slugger Field that houses an Old National Bank location. Witnesses inside the building said they saw a man fire multiple shots inside the bank on the first floor, near the conference room area. A total of nine people were wounded in the incident, including two police officers. Officers reportedly arrived within three minutes of being dispatched and exchanged gunfire with the suspect, who was later identified as 25-year-old Connor Sturgeon, a former employee of the bank. Sturgeon died on the scene.

Less than three hours after the bank shooting, Lousiville police responded to a call about a separate shooting outside of a community college that left one person dead and one injured.

Intelligence leak fallout

Alongside officials from the Pentagon and the White House, the U.S. Justice Department is investigating the leak of classified documents regarding the war in Ukraine.

The documents–which reportedly included sensitive information about the war in Ukraine, China, and U.S. allies–first surfaced on online platforms such as Twitter and Telegram, as well as on a Discord server for the video game Minecraft. Pentagon spokesperson Chris Meagher said the U.S. doesn’t know how the documents were made public, adding that the secrets disclosed in the leak could have “tremendous implications” and that the information “could lead to people losing their lives.”

Yesterday, Ukraine officials reportedly amended some military plans ahead of its planned counter-offensive due to the leaked documents. At the same time, Russian officials claimed that their forces had taken control of more than 75% of Bakhmut, which, in terms of casualties, has been the site of one of the deadliest battles of the 13-month-long conflict.

FBI warns of juice jacking

The FBI has warned people to not use public phone charging stations due to an increased risk of hackers hijacking phones with malware, a process known as “juice jacking.”

In a tweet, the FBI’s Denver Office said: “Avoid using free charging stations in airports, hotels or shopping centers. Bad actors have figured out ways to use public USB ports to introduce malware and monitoring software onto devices.” The FCC also said on its landing page that compromised USB ports “can lock a device or export personal data and passwords directly to the perpetrator.” As a precaution, both the FBI and FCC urged people to carry their own chargers and USB cords while traveling and to directly plug them into electrical outlets instead.

Public charging stations have multiplied in recent years as airports, hotels, shopping centers, and other public areas have increased services to accommodate growing numbers of people with smartphones.
