Abortion pill ruling

A federal appeals court partially overturned a Texas federal judge’s ruling that suspended FDA approval of the abortion pill mifepristone but allowed other parts of the decision to stand.

While a three-judge panel temporarily blocked the aspect of last week’s decision that suspended mifepristone’s FDA approval, their ruling now prohibits mifepristone to be dispensed by mail without a visit to a doctor’s office. The panel also ruled to prohibit mifepristone to be dispensed after seven weeks into a pregnancy instead of ten, which is the current threshold.

Since its FDA approval in 2000, mifepristone has been used as part of a two-drug regimen to induce an abortion in the first trimester of pregnancy (in combination with the drug misoprostol). It now accounts for more than half of all abortions in the U.S. In response to yesterday’s ruling, Attorney General Merrick Garland said the Justice Department will appeal the case to the Supreme Court.

SF stabbing suspect

A suspect was taken into custody yesterday in connection to the April 4th stabbing death of 43-year-old tech entrepreneur Bob Lee, according to the San Fransico Police Department.

According to multiple sources, the alleged stabber is Nima Momemi, whom Lee purportedly knew and was traveling in a car with through downtown San Francisco on the night of his death. Police apprehended Momemi–who is reportedly the owner of the outsourcing firm Expand IT–at his home in Emeryville yesterday around 5 AM local time. Police records show that Momemi was booked on murder charges at 9:19 AM, and Lee’s ex-wife confirmed his identity when communicating with reporters.

At his time of death, Lee worked as the chief product officer of MobileCoin. He is credited for creating Cash App, a smartphone-based payment app that allows for transfers between individuals, and was also a former executive at Square.

Mission to Jupiter

The European Space Agency (ESA) plans to launch its rocket carrying a satellite that will journey to Jupiter’s moons today.

ESA’s flagship mission, the Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer–or “JUICE,” for short–will search Jupiter and its moons for habitable environments for extraterrestrial life forms. The launch was originally scheduled for yesterday, but mission controllers scrapped it about 10 minutes before blastoff due to a risk of lightning strikes at ESA’s spaceport in French Guiana. After the postponement, the ESA said its next launch attempt would be today at 1:14 PM in the U.K (8:14 AM ET).

Once the JUICE spacecraft launches, it will travel more than 550M miles to fly past Jupiter and its ice-encrusted moons, Calisto, Europa, and Ganymede. The project reportedly cost the ESA $1.7B and is scheduled to last eight years, with its arrival in Jupiter’s system expected in July 2031.
