Intel leak suspect charged

Jack Teixeira, the 21-year-old suspect who was arrested for allegedly leaking classified files on a gaming chat server, was charged in federal court yesterday.

Teixeira’s court appearance came less than 24 hours after he was taken into custody by the FBI in Massachusetts. Per a court filing, he was charged with unlawfully copying and possessing classified defense records, along with another offense that makes it a crime for a U.S. employee to knowingly remove classified records to an unauthorized location. The charges against Teixeira fall under the 1917 Espionage Act, and each offense can carry a sentence of up to 10 years in prison.

Due to his position as a Cyber Transport Systems journeyman in the Massachusetts Air National Guard, defense officials claimed Teixeria would have been working on a network that carried highly classified information, and thus required him to have security clearance. His detention hearing is set for April 19th.

French pension reform

France’s highest constitutional court yesterday approved President Emmanuel Macron’s proposals to raise the minimum pension age in the country from 62 to 64.

The plans sparked widespread protests after Macron’s government invoked Article 49.3 of the country’s constitution last month, which pushed the changes through without a vote by members of parliament in France’s national assembly. In its ruling yesterday, the court said the actions by Macron’s government were in line with the constitution. Speaking to reporters, Macron said he would sign the bill into law within 48 hours of the court’s approval.

French citizens have engaged in widespread protests for the past three months over the reform. Even with the change, France will have one of the lowest minimum pension age thresholds in Europe. Spain’s retirement age to receive pension benefits is 65; in the U.K. it’s 66; in Germany and Italy, it’s 67.

Cave experiment concludes

A 50-year-old Spanish athlete emerged yesterday from spending 500 days living in a cave with no contact with the outside world.

Beatriz Flamini opted to live 70 meters below ground in the Los Gauchos cave near the Spanish town of Motril as part of an experiment on the effects of isolation on the human mind and body. Scientists monitored Flamini to study the impact of social isolation and extreme temporary disorientation on people’s perception of time, the possible neuropsychological and cognitive changes humans undergo underground, and the impact on circadian rhythms and sleep. After emerging yesterday, Flamini called her experience “excellent, unbeatable.”

While Flamini’s team said her time in isolation underground is a new world record, the Guinness Book of World Records hasn’t confirmed the claim. The “longest time survived trapped underground” record currently belongs to 33 miners who spent 69 days underground after the 2010 collapse of a copper-gold mine in Chile.
