Fighting in Sudan

Fighting between Sudan’s armed forces and a rival militia took place over the weekend in several parts of the African nation, including the capital of Khartoum.

The clashes are part of a power struggle between General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the commander of Sudan’s armed forces, and General Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, the head of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia group. The two generals are former allies who cooperated to oust dictator Omar al-Bashir in 2019 and jointly orchestrated a 2021 military coup that stopped the country’s transition to democracy. Fighting erupted after a disagreement over the integration of the RSF into the country’s military as part of a transition toward civilian rule.

So far, the conflict has left over 670 individuals wounded and at least 61 dead, including five civilians, according to the Sudan Doctors’ Syndicate. While the international community called for an end to the violence, the two sides signaled that they were unwilling to negotiate.

Birthday party shooting

At least four people lost their lives and over 20 others were wounded after a shooting at a 16th birthday party on Saturday night in Dadeville, Alabama.

The incident occurred around 10:30 PM local time at the Mahogany Masterpiece Dance Studio. The marketing director of the hospital group Ivy Creek Healthcare–which runs a hospital in Dadeville–said the hospital treated at least 15 gunshot victims, and that several victims were transferred to other hospitals nearby. While law enforcement hadn’t released details about the victims, a local pastor who serves as the chaplain for the Dadeville Police Department and for the town’s high school football team said most of them were teenagers.

Dadeville has a population of about 3.2K people and is located roughly 57 miles northeast of Alabama’s capital, Montgomery. As of last night, a suspect had not yet been identified and no arrests have been made.

Basquiat forgery scheme

A former Los Angeles auctioneer agreed to plead guilty to a scheme where he created fake artwork and falsely attributed the paintings to the artist Jean-Michel Basquiat.

Michael Barzman, 45, agreed to plead guilty to making false statements to the FBI during an interview in August. As part of the plea deal, Barzman admitted to creating the fake artwork alongside another individual that made its way through the art market. His forgeries formed the basis of an exhibition that opened in 2022 at the Orlando Museum of Art called “Heroes & Monsters: Jean-Michel Basquiat.”

Beginning as a graffiti artist in New York City, Basquiat rose to prominence in the 1980s and died at age 27 in 1988. In recent years, his paintings have fetched some of the highest prices for artwork ever paid at auction, including his piece Untitled from 1982 which sold for $110.5M at Sotheby’s New York in May 2017.
