Dadeville shooting arrests

Three people were taken into custody yesterday and charged with murder in last weekend’s shooting at a birthday party in Dadeville, Alabama, that left four dead and 32 wounded, according to local authorities.

Two of the suspects were identified as 17-year-old Ty Reik McCullough and 16-year-old Travis McCullough, both of Tuskegee. At a press conference, Sergeant Jeremy Burkett of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said the teenage brothers had been charged with four counts of reckless murder. Local District Attorney Mike Segrest said that he expects the state of Alabama to file more charges against the suspects, and added that they will be tried as adults. Yesterday afternoon, 20-year-old Wilson LaMar Hill Jr. of Auburn was also arrested and charged with four counts of reckless murder.

Police in Dadeville–which has a population of about 3.2K people–said that among the 32 injured, four are still hospitalized and four remain in critical condition.

Population of India

The United Nations yesterday released a report estimating that India will overtake China as the world’s most populous nation by this summer.

According to UNFPA’s 2023 State of World Population Report, India’s population will reach an estimated 1.4286B by the end of June, compared with China’s 1.4257B. The United States, meanwhile, will remain the third-most populated country in the world, with an estimated population of 340M. Per the report, eight countries will account for half of the projected growth in global population by 2050: the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, and Tanzania.

China has had the most people in the world since at least 1950, which is when United Nations population data began. Both China and India have more than 1.4B people; combined, the two countries make up more than one-third of the world’s 8B people.

Looming strike in Hollywood

TV and film writers this week voted to go on strike if they can’t reach a labor deal before the deadline of May 1st when their contract with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers expires.

The Writers Guild of America (WGA)–the union that represents the writers–says it needs to change the way producers compensate writers due to the shift to streaming services from traditional films and cable networks. Of the 9,218 members of the WGA who participated in the vote, 97.85% of them voted to authorize a strike.

The WGA represents around 11.5K screenwriters, making up the majority of the writers contributing to film and television productions in the U.S. If a strike happens, it would bring production on some shows and movies to a standstill. The last time that Hollywood writers went on strike was in 2007, and it lasted 100 days.
