Abortion pill ruling

The Supreme Court ruled to preserve access to the abortion pill mifepristone while an underlying lawsuit concerning its FDA approval is decided in lower courts.

The justices granted the Biden administration and mifepristone maker Danco Laboratories’ emergency requests to appeal an April 7th ruling from Texas District Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk. Kacsmaryk’s ruling would require that Americans make in-person doctor’s appointments in order to be prescribed mifepristone, and would prohibit the drug to be dispensed through the mail. The Supreme Court’s decision means those restrictions won’t be imposed and the drug will remain available as it was before a series of court orders limiting access to it.

Since its FDA approval in 2000, mifepristone has been used as part of a two-drug regimen to induce an abortion in the first trimester of pregnancy (in combination with the drug misoprostol). It now accounts for more than half of all abortions in the U.S.

NFL gambling scandal

The NFL announced yesterday that it suspended five players for violating the league’s gambling policy.

Four Detroit Lions players and one Washington Commanders player will be suspended due to the violations. Lions wide receiver Quintez Cephus and safety C.J. Moore were suspended indefinitely for betting on NFL games, along with Washington Commanders defensive end Shaka Toney. While the players can reapply for reinstatement after one year, Detroit announced that it had released Cephus and Moore from their contracts. Lions wide receivers Jameson Williams and Stanley Berryhill are each being suspended for six games for mobile betting on non-NFL games that occurred at the Lions’ Allen Park facility.

According to league policy, NFL players and personnel cannot bet on NFL games, the draft, or any league-related activities under any circumstances. They also cannot place any bets while at a team facility or on team-related travel.

Russia bombs its own city

Russia’s Defense Ministry announced that a Russian fighter jet accidentally dropped a bomb on one of its own cities yesterday.

The blast was reportedly centered near an apartment block in the Russian city of Belgorod and left three people wounded. Russian officials first claimed Kyiv was responsible for the blast. However, the Russian Defense Ministry later released a statement clarifying that it was caused by an “accidental discharge” from a Su-34 air force plane flying over Belgorod, which has a population of around 340K and is located about 25 miles east of the Russia-Ukraine border. Due to its location, Belgorod has faced regular drone attacks since Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine in February of 2022.

Yesterday’s bombing comes six months after an October 2022 incident where at least 14 people died after a Russian warplane crashed into a residential building in the country’s port city of Yeysk during a training flight.

Celebrate Earth Day

In honor of Earth Day today, let's take a moment to reflect on the importance of healthy soil.

Our soil is losing quality, which has a direct impact on the food we eat. Not only does it affect the taste, but it also means that our food is stripped of vital nutrients, leading to an increase in diseases and skyrocketing food prices. If we continue on this path, we could ultimately face a world without food.

But there is hope, and the inspiring film, The Need To GROW, is a testament to that. This weekend, in celebration of Earth Day, you have the opportunity to watch this powerful documentary totally for free, but only for the next few days. The film has earned over a dozen accolades at film festivals, including Best Documentary, Audience Favorite, and Best Environmental Film.

Watching The Need To GROW will not only touch your heart but will inspire you to make a difference on planet Earth.

So, click here to watch this remarkable film and discover how you can be part of the solution
