Top TipsUS Embassy in Sudan evacuatedU.S. special forces helped evacuate the American embassy in Sudan yesterday amid continued fighting in the nation. Secretary of State Antony Blinken confirmed that “all U.S. personnel and their dependents” have been safely evacuated and that the U.S. will “continue to assist” Americans in Sudan in planning for their own safety. The operation reportedly removed fewer than 100 people, and the U.S. has shuttered its mission in Khartoum indefinitely. While thousands of private American citizens still remain in the country, U.S. officials said it’s currently too dangerous for a broader evacuation mission. The fighting is part of a power struggle between General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the commander of Sudan’s armed forces, and General Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, the head of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia group. Over 400 people have died in the conflict since it began on April 15th, including one U.S. citizen. |

Chapter 11 for Bed Bath & BeyondHome goods retailer Bed Bath & Beyond filed for Chapter 11 protection yesterday and announced a liquidation sale after attempts to keep the company afloat failed. As of last night, the company’s website reads: “Thank you to all of our loyal customers. We have made the difficult decision to begin winding down our operations. Bed Bath & Beyond and buybuy BABY stores remain open to serve you.” In a press release, the company said that it had secured $240M in debt from capital firm Sixth Street which will allow it to continue operations during the wind-down process. Store closing sales are reportedly slated to begin Wednesday, along with the closure of some locations. Bed Bath & Beyond rose in popularity in the 1990s as a retail shopping destination but has seen demand drop off in recent years due to unsuccessful attempts to sell more store-branded products and the increased popularity of online shopping on marketplaces such as Amazon. |

Disneyland dragon blazeA 45-foot-tall animatronic dragon caught fire at Disneyland in Anaheim, California, during the Fantasmic! nighttime show on Saturday evening. The blaze broke out at the park’s Tom Sawyer Island attraction and forced park officials to cancel the performance’s final show of the evening. In a statement, Disneyland theme park representatives said “Anaheim Fire & Rescue quickly responded and the fire was extinguished,” adding that “all cast members were safely evacuated from Tom Sawyer Island” and that the cause of the fire remains under investigation. No cast members or parkgoers were hurt in the incident, according to the Anaheim fire department. Fantasmic! originally opened in 1992 in the Frontierland section of Disneyland. A 27-minute-long show that takes place live, the attraction features fireworks, characters, live actors, water effects, pyrotechnics, lasers, music, audio-animatronics, searchlights, boat floats, and mist screen projections. |
