Another Sudan ceasefire

The Sudanese Armed Forces and the rival paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) agreed to a seven-day ceasefire starting tomorrow, according to a statement from the foreign ministry of South Sudan.

Per South Sudan’s foreign ministry, the two warring parties–which began fighting on April 15th as part of a power struggle for Sudan’s leadership–also said they would send representatives for peace talks “to be held at an agreed venue of their choice.” Sudan’s army and the RSF have agreed to at least three previous ceasefires that have ranged in theory from 24-72 hours, though each ceasefire was violated by both sides.

Yesterday’s announcement came after the UN’s refugee agency (UNHCR) warned more than 800K people may flee to neighboring countries, as the ongoing violence stifles evacuation convoys from Sudanese ports. According to the UN, over 100K people have already fled the country since the fighting began, and at least 520 deaths have been reported.

Border gets more troops

The Biden administration approved sending 1.5K active-duty troops to the U.S.-Mexico border amid concerns about an influx of migrants coming into the country once Title 42 is lifted.

Title 42, the law invoked during the Covid-19 pandemic that permits the U.S. to turn away asylum seekers for public health reasons, is set to expire on May 11th. According to senior U.S. officials, the end of it could entice more people to present themselves at the southern border. Reportedly, the troops are meant to temporarily supplement the work of the U.S. Border Patrol but will not carry out law enforcement. They will add to the ongoing deployment of about 2.5K National Guard troops.

The decision to send troops to the border echoes similar moves made by Presidents George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Donald Trump, as Congress hasn’t fully funded the Border Patrol agency to operate without outside help.

The effects of loneliness

The U.S. surgeon general issued a report in which he claimed that widespread loneliness and isolation in the U.S. poses health risks as deadly as smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day.

In an advisory report, Dr. Vivek Murthy said that about half of U.S. adults say they’ve experienced loneliness, and added that without fostering connection, “we will pay an ever-increasing price in the form of our individual and collective health and well-being.” Murthy’s report claims that isolation elevates a person’s likelihood of experiencing depression and anxiety and increases the risk of premature death by nearly 30% through health conditions including diabetes, heart attacks, insomnia, and dementia.

Social media is one of the main culprits of increased loneliness, along with isolation due to the Covid-19 pandemic, per Murthy’s report. The advisory is part of the Biden administration's broader efforts to address mental health, according to White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.

‘Enough’ sleep VS GOOD sleep

Even if you sleep for 8 or more hours, you might not feel rested and alert if you don't get enough deep and REM sleep. Fortunately, there are well-researched compounds that can help you relax, lower your heart rate, and prepare you for rejuvenating sleep.

Two of these compounds are GABA and L-theanine. L-theanine is found in green tea – but not a stimulant – and increases alpha brain waves to calm your mind within 30 minutes. GABA is a neurotransmitter with relaxing effects associated with sleep. Combining these with ingredients like taurine, glycine, magnesium, and 5HTP creates Sleep Breakthrough, a comprehensive nutritional sleep support.

This week you can get a free bottle of magnesium and a pair of blue-blocking glasses worth over $90. Plus, as a Tip News reader, you get an extra 10% off, auto-applied at checkout.

Try Sleep Breakthrough and optimize your sleep naturally!
