Proud Boys conviction

Proud Boys leader Henry “Enrique” Tarrio and three others were found guilty of seditious conspiracy yesterday for their roles in events at the U.S. Capitol on January 6th, 2021.

Per federal law, seditious conspiracy is committed when two or more people in the U.S. conspire to overthrow, destroy, seize the property of or levy war against the U.S. government, or to prevent the execution of any U.S. law. It is among the most weighty charges the Justice Department has sought in connection to Jan. 6th, carrying up to 20 years in prison.

The other three Proud Boys members convicted are Ethan Nordean, Joseph Biggs, and Zachary Rehl. Prosecutors have now secured seditious conspiracy convictions or guilty pleas for 15 Jan. 6th defendants–six associated with the Proud Boys and nine associated with the Oath Keepers. In April, the DOJ said over 1K people have been charged in connection to Jan. 6th events at the Capitol.

Ed Sheeran verdict

A New York jury found English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran not liable in a case where he was accused of copying the music from Marvin Gaye’s 1973 song "Let's Get It On" in his 2014 hit “Thinking Out Loud.”

The copyright infringement lawsuit was brought by the family of singer-songwriter Ed Townsend, who co-wrote Gaye’s song. The suit reportedly sought $100M in damages. Though Sheeran and co-writer Amy Wadge wrote a similar chord progression for “Thinking Out Loud” to the progression used in “Let’s Get It On,” Sheeran’s team argued that those chords belonged to the “songwriter’s toolkit.”

Songwriters and the music industry have closely followed the case, expecting ramifications for musicians’ creative freedom. Sheeran has faced several lawsuits in the past for copyright infringement. In 2016, two songwriters accused him of copying the melody of one of their songs for his song “Photograph.” He settled the lawsuit the following year and granted co-writing credit to the plaintiffs.

Subway chokehold homicide

Protests erupted in New York City following the death of a man who was held in a chokehold on a subway earlier in the week.

Jordan Neely, 30, was reportedly having a mental episode on the train and allegedly threatened strangers when a 24-year-old former U.S. Marine veteran tackled him to the ground and put him in a chokehold, according to witnesses and police. Video footage of the incident shows Neely losing consciousness while being held in the chokehold for 2 minutes and 55 seconds. Police questioned the former Marine after the incident but released him without charges, and medical examiner ruled Neely’s death as a homicide.

According to New York authorities, Neely had been arrested 42 times since 2013 and was believed to be unhoused. His most recent arrest was in November 2021 for reportedly punching a 67-year-old female passenger in the face as she exited a subway station.
