Coronation of King Charles III

King Charles III was formally crowned at London’s Westminister Abbey on Saturday, cementing his status as the King of England.

According to audience measurement data, at least 18M people in the U.K. watched the coronation, which marked the first such event since Queen Elizabeth II’s in 1953. Alongside King Charles III, his wife Camilla received Queen Mary’s crown, marking the first time in recent history a queen consort has used an existing crown for the coronation. Queen Mary wore the headpiece for her queen consort’s coronation in 1911.

With the coronation, King Charles III is now officially the monarch and head of state for 15 sovereign countries, collectively known as the Commonwealth realms. Those countries are Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, the Bahamas, Belize, Canada, Grenada, Jamaica, Papua New Guinea, New Zealand, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, the Solomon Islands, Tuvalu, and the U.K.

Mall shooting in Texas

Eight people lost their lives and at least nine were injured in a shooting at an outlet mall in Texas on Saturday evening.

The incident occurred at the Allen Premium Outlets, an outdoor shopping center roughly 35 miles north of Dallas. Authorities identified the assailant as 33-year-old Mauricio Garcia, who died on the scene after a shootout with police and who is believed to have acted alone. Allen Fire Chief Jonathan Boyd said that at least nine people were transported to hospitals, where two of the victims later died. Hospital spokespeople confirmed that the victims' ages range from 5 to 51 years old.

According to data from Gun Violence Archive, Saturday's attack was the second-deadliest mass shooting of 2023, in terms of casualties. The deadliest shooting this year took place on January 21st at a ballroom dance studio in Monterey Park, California, where 11 people lost their lives.

Arab League readmits Syria

The Arab League agreed to readmit Syria to the organization after a nearly 12-year suspension, according to a joint statement from the league and Syrian officials.

Syria’s readmittance was approved at a meeting of League members in Cairo, with foreign ministers from 13 of the 22-nation group’s members present for the decision. On top of normalizing ties between Arab League leaders and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, the decision means that Syria can resume its participation in league meetings immediately and calls for a resolution of the crisis resulting from the country’s civil war, including the flight of refugees to neighboring countries and drug smuggling across the region.

The country’s membership in the Arab League was suspended in 2011 over Assad’s crackdown on pro-democracy protests, which led to the country’s ongoing civil war. The conflict has killed nearly 500K people since March 2011 and displaced around half of the country’s pre-war population of 23M.
