Arab League readmits SyriaThe Arab League agreed to readmit Syria to the organization after a nearly 12-year suspension, according to a joint statement from the league and Syrian officials. Syria’s readmittance was approved at a meeting of League members in Cairo, with foreign ministers from 13 of the 22-nation group’s members present for the decision. On top of normalizing ties between Arab League leaders and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, the decision means that Syria can resume its participation in league meetings immediately and calls for a resolution of the crisis resulting from the country’s civil war, including the flight of refugees to neighboring countries and drug smuggling across the region. The country’s membership in the Arab League was suspended in 2011 over Assad’s crackdown on pro-democracy protests, which led to the country’s ongoing civil war. The conflict has killed nearly 500K people since March 2011 and displaced around half of the country’s pre-war population of 23M. |
