Apparently, they hit on the name Saurona because the black rings on the insect’s orange wings reminded them of Sauron’s all-seeing eye described in Tolkien’s story.

Russian drone attack

Russian forces launched a renewed wave of drone and missile strikes yesterday, reportedly firing 60 Iranian-made Kamikaze drones at Ukrainian targets.

Witnesses described air raid alerts that were heard throughout roughly two-thirds of Ukraine, including in the country’s capital of Kyiv. There, the city’s mayor called the attack the “biggest" kamikaze drone attack on Kyiv since Russia launched its invasion in February 2022. While Ukrainian officials said that all 36 drones fired at Kyiv were shot down, at least five people were injured when debris hit apartments and other buildings. One missile reportedly set a food warehouse ablaze in Odesa, where officials reported three people were injured.

Moscow has intensified airstrikes over the past week ahead of an expected Ukrainian offensive. Yesterday’s assault marks the fourth attack in eight days on Kyiv and came 24 hours before Russia celebrates Victory Day, an occasion that commemorates the surrender of Nazi Germany in WWII.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced the deployment of a new Texas Tactical Border Force to prevent a surge in migrants attempting to enter the country at the U.S.-Mexico border.

Abbott’s move comes ahead of Thursday’s lifting of Title 42, a policy enforced under former President Trump that allows border patrol officers to turn away migrants without accepting their asylum applications due to public health reasons. The U.S. is expected to see a surge of migrants at its southern border once the policy is lifted. In a statement, the Texas National Guard said it activated 545 more service members around the state to “reinforce the border mission in anticipation of the end of Title 42 immigration restrictions.”

The Texas Tactical Border Force is meant to bolster Operation Lone Star, which Abbott’s office said in a press release has turned back 371K people who unlawfully crossed the border and has resulted in about 27K criminal arrests.

A woman saved by wine

A woman was found after being stranded in the Australian bush for five days and reportedly survived by eating sweets and drinking a bottle of wine.

Lillian Ip, 48, set off on what was meant to be a day trip, traveling through the bushland near the town of Bright. She hit a dead-end after taking a wrong turn, and her vehicle became stuck in the mud. She was 37 miles away from the nearest town with no water, no cell phone service, and wasn’t able to walk far due to health issues. Her family reported her missing after they didn’t receive her daily check-in call, and police began searching for her vehicle.

After Ip was found, she told local authorities that she survived by keeping the car heater on, eating sweets she had on hand, and drinking the wine she intended to give as a gift–even though she doesn’t drink alcohol. Ip was then treated at a nearby hospital for dehydration.
