Cyclone Mocha hits Myanmar

Cyclone Mocha hit the coastlines of Bangladesh and Myanmar yesterday as a Category 5 storm.

According to Myanmar’s Meteorological Department, the cyclone made landfall in the country’s Rakhine state about 25 miles north of Sittwe township. Winds reportedly reached maximum speeds of up to 173 miles per hour at Cyclone Mocha’s peak intensity, making it the second-strongest storm ever recorded in the Bay of Bengal. Myanmar authorities reported several deaths caused by wind and rain as of yesterday morning, and in southeastern Bangladesh, authorities said that over 500K people were evacuated from their homes.

Myanmar and Bangladesh are prone to cyclones and contain large numbers of refugees. About 6M people across Myanmar's Rakhine state are in need of humanitarian assistance, per OCHA. About 1M Rohingya refugees fled to southern Bangladesh after Myanmar’s military intensified a campaign against the mostly Muslim ethnic group in 2017.

Israel & Palestine ceasefire

Israeli forces and militants in the Gaza Strip agreed to a ceasefire that ended five days of cross-frontier fire that left 33 Palestinians dead as well as two people in Israel.

A truce mediated by Egyptian officials went into effect at 10 PM local time on Saturday night. Hours later, a rocket was fired toward southern Israel that Palestinian factions said had been launched due to a “technical error.” Israel’s Defence Forces said it responded with tank artillery fire that hit two military sites belonging to Palestinian Islamic Jihad, and no injuries were reported. Regarding the ceasefire, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement that “quiet will be met with quiet.”

Tensions between Israel and Palestine have risen over the past year, with more than 130 Palestinians and at least 20 Israelis and foreigners losing their lives in 2023 so far across Israel, the West Bank, and the Gaza Strip.

NBA conference finals set

The 2023 NBA Conference Finals are set, with the Denver Nuggets facing the Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics going up against the Miami Heat.

Last night, the Boston Celtics beat the Philadelphia 76ers in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinals with a final score of 112-88. Celtics forward Jayson Tatum scored 51 points total, the most in a Game 7 in NBA history. He also became the second player in NBA playoff history to record at least 50 points and 0 turnovers in a single game. The only other player to do so was Jamal Murray against the Utah Jazz in 2020.

Of the final four teams, the Celtics and the Lakers are tied for the most championships in NBA history, with 17 each. The Heat have earned three titles, while the Nuggets have none. Founded in 1967, the Nuggets have never reached the Finals and have only been to the Western Conference Finals five times.
