Idaho murders indictment

An Idaho grand jury indicted Bryan Kohberger, the man suspected in the murder of four Idaho college students on November 13th, 2022, on murder and burglary charges.

Kohberger, a 28-year-old criminology Ph.D. student at Washington State University, was arrested in December on four counts of first-degree murder and one count of burglary for allegedly breaking into a rental home in Moscow, Idaho, and killing four students inside. Per prosecutors, Kohberger allegedly visited the house at least a dozen times before the murders and returned one last time after the killings but before 911 was called.

A preliminary hearing in the case against him was originally scheduled for next month, but prosecutors’ decision to impanel a grand jury allows the state to avoid the weeklong preliminary hearing that would have required them to present evidence before a judge. Kohberger has yet to enter a plea and is expected to do so at an arraignment on Monday.

Floods in Northern Italy

At least nine people lost their lives and over 25K were evacuated from their homes to avoid floods and landslides caused by rain in Italy’s northern Emilia-Romagna region, according to Italian officials.

According to Civil Protection Minister Nello Musumeci, some areas received half their average annual rainfall in just 36 hours, with flooding hitting 37 towns and communities and around 120 landslides registered. In response, Formula One officials canceled the F1 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, which had been due to take place on Sunday in Imola. Per F1 officials, the race was called off in an effort to relieve pressure on emergency crews that are already spread thin from rescue efforts and to prevent motor racing fans from visiting the region.

The rain and flooding came after months of drought in northern Italy which had dried out the land, reducing its capacity to absorb water and worsening the impact of the floods, according to meteorologists.

Global temperature report

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) released a report in which it claimed that there is a 66% chance that global average surface temperatures will exceed the Paris Agreement’s targets for temperature increases during one of the next five years.

The WMO’s report also claims that there is a 98% likelihood that at least one of the next five years will be the warmest ever on record. According to a statement from WMO secretary-general Petteri Taalas, a “warming El Nino is expected to develop in the coming months” that will combine with human activity to “push global temperatures into uncharted territory.” Typically, El Nino increases global temperatures in the year after it develops, which would be 2024 in this case.

The current warmest year the planet has seen is 2016 when average temperatures were 1.28° Celsius above pre-industrial levels; the WMO says there is a 98% chance this record will be broken by the end of 2027.
