Good morning, and happy Friday! To start your day off with some incredible news: earlier this month, a 13-year-old boy in Michigan used a slingshot to save his 8-year-old sister from an attempted kidnapping, striking the assailant in the head and the chest and allowing his sister to get away. Ukraine advances in Bakhmut

The Ukrainian military reported further advancements on the outskirts of Bakhmut yesterday.

Per Ukrainian military officials, its troops had advanced in certain places by over a kilometer. Meanwhile, the head of the Wagner mercenary group–which is spearheading the Russian assault on Bakhmut–said his forces advanced up to 400 meters. With the war in its 64th week, Ukrainian forces had been on the defensive in Bakhmut for over half a year, weathering winter and spring offensives by Moscow. Kyiv is now in the midst of carrying out its biggest advance in six months before a planned counteroffensive.

The reports came the same day the Pentagon said that an accounting error overvalued weapon shipments that the U.S. has sent to Ukraine since the war started by $3B. Per the DOD, this accounting discrepancy may ultimately provide more of a budget for additional weapons to be sent to Kyiv for its defense against Russian forces.

Disney scraps Florida campus

Amid its continued feud with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, Disney is closing a hotel and abandoning plans to build a corporate campus in Florida that would have housed 2K employees.

The planned move was already previously delayed last summer to 2026. In a memo sent to employees, Josh D’Amaro, who runs Disney’s theme parks and consumer products, said: “This was not an easy decision to make, but I believe it is the right one.” D’Amaro also wrote that the company has plans to invest around $17B in Florida and create 13K jobs over the next decade.

The news came on the same day that multiple sources reported that DeSantis will officially enter the 2024 U.S. presidential race next week. According to a recent Reuters poll, former President Trump has 49% of registered Republicans’ picks for the Republican primary, while DeSantis sits at 21%.

G7 summit kicks off

The Group of 7, otherwise known as the “G7,” kicks off its annual summit today in the southern Japanese city of Hiroshima.

This year, the countries are expected to discuss Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, China, North Korean weapons testing, and more. They also reportedly plan to announce more than 300 new sanctions on Russia intended to further isolate the country’s economy. According to a senior Biden administration official, the targets of these sanctions will include “individuals, entities, vessels, and aircraft” across Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.

The G7 is an informal grouping of industrialized democracies that meets annually to discuss issues like global economic governance, international security, and energy policy. It consists of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the U.K., and the U.S. Russia belonged to the bloc from 1998 through 2014–when it was known as the G8–but was suspended following its annexation of Ukraine’s Crimea region.
