Top TipsEl Salvador stadium crushAt least nine people lost their lives and dozens were injured when stampeding soccer fans pushed through one of the access gates at a soccer match in El Salvador over the weekend. The incident occurred about 16 minutes into the playoff quarterfinal match between Alianza and Club Deportivo at the Cuscatlan stadium in the country’s capital San Salvador. Hundreds of people were reportedly treated at the scene, and at least a hundred others were transported to hospitals. Describing the event as “unprecedented,” President Nayib Bukele said an “exhaustive investigation” into the incident would be carried out by the national police and the attorney general’s office. Yesterday’s stampede marks the second of its kind to occur at a soccer stadium in the past 12 months. During an October 2022 match in Indonesia, at least 125 people died and around 320 were injured in a crowd crush in one of the world’s deadliest sports stadium disasters. |

Zelensky appeals to G7Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Hiroshima over the weekend to meet with leaders at the G7 summit to appeal for continued support in Ukraine’s war against Russia. Zelensky reportedly arrived on a French government plane after a stopover in Saudi Arabia. During his visit, he met with French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, President Joe Biden, and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. His arrival came hours after the U.S. said it would train Ukrainian pilots on American-made F-16 fighter jets and allow allies to provide the advanced warplanes to Kyiv–a move Zelensky called “historic” and that Russia has condemned. This weekend’s summit also included a number of invited guests, including the leaders of India, Brazil, and Indonesia. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Zelensky yesterday and said India would do “everything we can” to find a resolution to the conflict, though the country remains a major purchaser of Russian oil. |

Colombian plane crashColombian authorities are still searching for four Indigenous children who were on a small plane that crashed in the Amazon jungle this month but have not been found. The children have been missing since May 1st when the plane they were traveling in crashed in the jungle. On Wednesday, Colombian President Gustavo Petro wrote in a tweet that the children–aged 13, 9, and 4, as well as an 11-month-old baby–had been found alive thanks to arduous searching by members of the armed forces. However, Petro deleted the tweet on Thursday “because it hasn't been possible to confirm the information” that Colombia’s child welfare agency had provided. The Cessna 206 aircraft was carrying a total of seven people when it issued a Mayday alert due to engine failure on May 1st. Three adults, including the pilot, died as a result of the crash and their bodies were found inside the plane. |
