Illinois Catholic Church abuse

A multi-year investigation into child sexual abuse by members of the Catholic Church in Illinois found that nearly 2K children across the state were sexually abused.

According to the report released by the office of Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul, “Survivors spoke of years, and often decades, struggling with challenges including insomnia, anxiety, trust issues, nightmares, suicidal ideation, guilt, addiction, alcoholism, depression, posttraumatic stress disorder, issues creating and maintaining relationships, and sexual side effects.” The report gives names and detailed information of 451 Catholic clerics and religious brothers responsible for the alleged abuse of children across all of the dioceses in Illinois. Of the 451 clerics in the report, 330 have died, per Raoul.

Prior to Raoul’s report becoming public, the Diocese of Chicago released updated guidance on how it handles alleged abuse. According to the Catholic Conference of Illinois, 3.5M Catholics make up approximately 27% of the state’s total population.

Gershkovich detention extended

A Russian court extended the detention of imprisoned Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich for another three months.

Gershkovich, who works in the Journal’s Moscow bureau, was detained on March 29th in Yekaterinburg, Russia’s fourth-largest city. The FSB has charged Gershkovich with espionage, accusing him of collecting “information constituting a state secret about the activities of an enterprise within Russia’s military-industrial complex.” The ruling from yesterday’s hearing –which Gershkovich’s parents reportedly attended in Moscow–means he will remain in pretrial detention in the city’s Lefortovo prison until at least August 30th.

The U.S. has designed Gershkovich as “wrongly detained” and has demanded that Russia release him immediately. He is the first American journalist to be detained in Russia on spying charges since the end of the Cold War. If convicted, he could face up to 20 years in a Russian prison.

Another Biden whistleblower

A second IRS whistleblower has alleged retaliation for raising concerns of Justice Department leadership “acting inappropriately” in its investigation into President Biden’s son, Hunter Biden.

Reports of the second whistleblower came less than one week after another IRS criminal supervisory special agent said he and his team were removed from the investigation into possible tax violations committed by Hunter Biden. Communications obtained by the first whistleblower’s lawyers reportedly show that the second whistleblower was threatened with allegations of criminal conduct after raising concerns about how the DOJ handled the case, making similar claims as the first whistleblower of “preferential treatment and politics” that have hindered the probe.

Biden, 53, is being investigated for allegedly not paying taxes on largely foreign-sourced income. The investigation has also reportedly looked at whether he laundered money, violated the Foreign Agents Registration Act, and lied about his drug use on a firearm purchase form. No charges have yet been filed.
