‘Trap Queen’ rapper sentencedRapper Fetty Wap was sentenced to six years in federal prison for his role in a New York-based drug-trafficking scheme. The rapper–who was born in Paterson, New Jersey, and whose real name is Willie Maxwell–was arrested in October 2021 on charges of participating in a conspiracy to smuggle drugs into the New York area. He pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute and possess cocaine, which carries a minimum prison term of five years. The scheme Maxwell was connected to reportedly involved narcotics being shipped from the West Coast and sold in New Jersey and Long Island. During the trial, Maxwell’s attorneys suggested that he turned to selling drugs due to hardship brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic. Maxwell rose to prominence in 2015 when his debut single “Trap Queen” reached No. 2 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song’s lyrics make references to cooking and selling drugs alongside a romantic partner. |
