DeSantis announces presidential bid

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis officially entered the 2024 presidential race, revealing his decision in a Federal Election Commission filing yesterday.

After the filing paperwork was revealed, DeSantis, 44, appeared alongside Twitter owner Elon Musk in an event on the social media platform where he formally announced his campaign for the Republican nomination in 2024. DeSantis has consistently come second to former President Trump in multiple polls of the Republican field. He was re-elected Florida’s governor last November by a spread of 19 percentage points and was widely reported to be staffing up while visiting states that will vote early in the primary next year.

With his bid, DeSantis joins a field that includes candidates such as former President Donald Trump, former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, South Carolina Senator Tim Scott, former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson, and biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy.

Tina Turner dies at 83

Tina Turner, the American-born singer informally known as the “Queen of Rock 'n' Roll, passed away at age 83 yesterday in her home near Zurich, Switzerland.

Born Anna Mae Bullock on November 26th, 1939, in Tennessee, Turner began performing at a young age and immersed herself in the local rhythm and blues scene as a teenager. In 1956, she met Ike Turner from the band Kings of Rhythm and became part of their act under the stage name, Tina Turner. The pair married in Mexico in 1962, two years after the birth of their son, Ronnie. She divorced Ike in 1978, alleging years of physical abuse and infidelity.

Throughout her five-decade career, Turner sold over 100M records. She lent her voice to charting singles such as “What’s Love Got to Do with It,” “The Best,” “River Deep – Mountain High” and a cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Proud Mary,” among others.

‘Trap Queen’ rapper sentenced

Rapper Fetty Wap was sentenced to six years in federal prison for his role in a New York-based drug-trafficking scheme.

The rapper–who was born in Paterson, New Jersey, and whose real name is Willie Maxwell–was arrested in October 2021 on charges of participating in a conspiracy to smuggle drugs into the New York area. He pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute and possess cocaine, which carries a minimum prison term of five years. The scheme Maxwell was connected to reportedly involved narcotics being shipped from the West Coast and sold in New Jersey and Long Island. During the trial, Maxwell’s attorneys suggested that he turned to selling drugs due to hardship brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Maxwell rose to prominence in 2015 when his debut single “Trap Queen” reached No. 2 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song’s lyrics make references to cooking and selling drugs alongside a romantic partner.
