Top TipsWagner Bakhmut withdrawalThe Wagner private mercenary group has begun withdrawing its forces from Bakhmut and transferring its positions there to regular Russian troops, per a video statement from the group’s founder Yevgeny Prigozhin. Bakhmut has been the site of a seven-month-long battle that has been the war’s longest and bloodiest conflict. Prigozhin announced the city’s capture on Saturday and said his forces would pull out by June 1st. According to Ukrainian military officials, Russia has replaced its Wagner units with regular soldiers on the city’s outskirts while the group’s fighters remain inside it. Ukraine’s military also maintains that Bakhmut has not fully fallen to Russian forces. The withdrawal announcement comes one day after Prigozhin claimed that his force lost more than 10K fighters in the city. Per Prigozhin, about 20% of the 50K Russian convicts he recruited to fight in the 15-month war lost their lives in battles in and around Bakhmut, which had a pre-war population of around 70K. |

Supreme Court curbs EBAThe Supreme Court issued a ruling yesterday that limits the Environmental Protection Agency’s ability to oversee certain bodies of water. In 2004, an Idaho couple obtained county permits needed to develop a vacant residential lot they purchased. However, the EPA informed them the land was subject to its review because it contained wetlands about 300 feet from a nearby lake. An appeals court sided with the EPA in 2021, and the plaintiffs asked the Supreme Court to provide a clearer definition of what the law meant when it gave the EPA power to regulate the “waters of the United States” under the Clean Water Act. While the Supreme Court’s ruling was unanimous, a majority of the justices said the lack of clarity about what types of waters the Clean Water Act covers was difficult for landowners to understand. They contended that the couple’s property lacked enough connection to the lake, and therefore, permits aren’t required to develop it. |

Oath Keepers sentencedOath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes was sentenced to 18 years in prison for seditious conspiracy for his role in events at the U.S. Capitol on January 6th, 2021. Alongside Rhodes, Kelly Meggs–the leader of the Florida chapter of the organization–was sentenced to 12 years in prison. In a statement from the Justice Department, Attorney General Merrick Garland said that the sentences “reflect the grave threat the actions of these defendants posed to our democratic institutions,” adding that the U.S. “proved at trial that the Oath Keepers plotted for months to violently disrupt the peaceful transfer of power from one administration to the next.” Yesterday's sentencing comes about three weeks after Proud Boys leader Henry “Enrique” Tarrio and three others were found guilty of seditious conspiracy for their roles in connection to Jan 6th. The sentence handed down to Rhodes is the longest one given so far related to Jan 6th. |
