Top TipsDebt ceiling dealPresident Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy signed off on an agreement to temporarily suspend the debt ceiling and cap some federal spending in order to prevent a national debt default. Per its full text, which McCarthy released on Sunday, the deal includes increased defense spending and a pullback of $21.4B from the $80B boost in funding that the IRS was granted as part of the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022. The agreement would also reinstate student debt payments and the accrual of interest starting on August 30th, ending a payment pause that had originated as a response to the pandemic. The deal comes days before June 5th, which Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said was the day that the country would face a first-ever default on its debt unless a deal was reached. The Biden-McCarthy deal would suspend the debt limit until January 2025. The plan now heads to Congress for a vote. |

Erdogan re-elected in TurkeyTurkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan secured re-election on Sunday, according to an announcement from the head of Turkey's Supreme Election Council. Erdogan’s re-election caps a runoff vote that is set to extend his 20-year rule until 2028. His challenger, Kemal Kilicdaroglu, called it “the most unfair election in years” but didn’t dispute the outcome. Kilicdaroglu campaigned on promises to oversee constitutional reforms to restore a parliamentary system, reverse crackdowns on free speech, and repair the country’s economy, which saw inflation levels at around 40% last month after hitting 85% in October 2022. The day after Erdogan secured victory, the Turkish lira hit a record low, briefly touching 20.0608 against the U.S. dollar to surpass a low seen last week. His third presidential term comes on the heels of a February earthquake that became the deadliest natural disaster in modern Turkey’s history and for which his government’s response faced criticism. |

NBA Finals are setThe 2023 NBA Finals are set, with the Miami Heat facing off against the Denver Nuggets to vie for the league’s championship trophy. The Heat defeated the Boston Celtics last night with a final score of 103-84 to become Eastern Conference champions. In the Western Conference Finals, the Nuggets–led by center Nikola Jokic–beat the Los Angeles Lakers in four games, earning their first sweep in franchise history. In that series, Nuggets point guard Jamal Murray became the first player in NBA history to average 30 points on 50-40-90 shooting in a Conference Finals (Murray shot 52.7% from the field, 40.5% from beyond the arc, and 95% from the free throw line). Miami has three championship trophies, from 2006, 2012, and 2013, while Denver has none. This year marks Denver’s first appearance in the NBA Finals since the team was founded in 1967. Game 1 will take place on June 1st. |
