Nova Scotia wildfires

Two wildfires in Nova Scotia continue to burn, including one that started last Saturday in Shelburne County which has grown into the largest wildfire in the Canadian province’s history.

According to Canadian officials, the fire on the southern tip of the province has burned over 20K hectares, with flames reaching over 320 feet in height. Smoke from the wildfire has also drifted south across the U.S. border, prompting air quality warnings in the Northeast. Canadian officials said yesterday that federal aid was coming, along with about 100 firefighters from the U.S. after local authorities appealed for outside assistance.

No fatalities or injuries have been reported from the blaze so far. However, around 200 homes and structures have been destroyed or damaged, and about 5K people have been evacuated from the region. Meanwhile, another wildfire that forced the evacuation of over 16K people near Nova Scotia’s largest city, Halifax, continues to burn.

Billy Joel to end MSG residency

Billy Joel and Madison Square Garden Entertainment announced that the singer will end his residency at the New York City venue in July of 2024, after 10 years and 150 concerts.

The announcement was made during a press conference at the venue, attended by Joel, MSG Entertainment CEO James Dolan, and New York City Mayor Eric Adams. According to Dolan, the first of Joel’s final 10 shows at the venue will take place on October 20th and will conclude with his 150th lifetime performance at the Garden in July 2024.

Joel’s first performance at the arena took place on December 14th, 1978. In 2006, Joel set the venue’s record for “most consecutive performances by any artist” with 12 consecutive performances. In December 2013, he was named MSG’s first-ever music franchise, beginning his residency in January 2014 with one show every month. Throughout the course of the residency, Joel has sold more than 1.6M tickets.

Studying brain shapes

The results of a new study indicate that the shape and structure of our brains–including their sizes, curves, and grooves–can influence our thoughts and behavior.

According to the findings, which were published in Nature, scientists at the University of Sydney and Monash University examined the MRI scans of 255 participants’ brains while they performed tasks like tapping their fingers or recalling a sequence of images. The team then looked at 10K different maps of brain activity taken from over 1K experiments they conducted across the world. Using that data, the researchers created a computer model that simulated the impact of brain size and shapes on brain waves.

The scientists said the study’s findings were significant because they could potentially simplify the way that we can study how the brain functions, develops, and ages. They added our brains’ physical architectures “could be more important” than the connections between neurons, which is what conventional medical wisdom emphasizes.
