The report calls attention to aggressive dog behavior mail carriers sometimes face and is how the USPS chose to kick off National Dog Bite Awareness Week. Happy Monday, indeed!

Train crash investigation

India’s railway minister suggested that a signal fault led to the train crash in eastern Odisha state that left at least 275 dead and more than 1K injured.

On Friday night, two trains derailed in the worst rail accident this century in India. After investigating the cause of the crash, Indian officials said it was related to an error in the electronic signaling system, a safety mechanism designed to prevent conflicting movements between trains. The system also reportedly monitors the status of signals that tell drivers how close they are to the next train, how fast they can go, and alerts them to the presence of stationary trains on the track.

Per Indian officials, the error led to one passenger train being diverted onto the wrong tracks and slamming into a freight train carrying heavy goods that sat idle. The freight train’s carriages derailed onto the opposite track, where they were hit by an oncoming high-speed train.

Debt ceiling bill signed

President Biden signed legislation that lifts the nation’s debt ceiling, averting a first-ever default on the federal government’s debt.

Raising the nation’s debt ceiling, which sits at $31.4T, will ensure that the federal government can borrow to pay debts it has already incurred. President Biden signed the bill two days before June 5th–the date the U.S. Treasury said it would no longer be able to pay all of the nation’s obligations in full and on time, which would have sent shockwaves through the U.S. and global economies unless the ceiling was lifted.

The legislation includes increased defense spending and a pullback of $21.4B from the $80B funding boost that the IRS was granted as part of the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022. The agreement also reinstates student debt payments and the accrual of interest starting on August 30th, ending a payment pause that originated as a response to the pandemic.

Sonic booms in DC

Explosion sounds that were heard yesterday across Washington, D.C., and nearby towns were identified as sonic booms from F-16 fighter jets.

According to FAA officials, F-16s were scrambled to intercept an unresponsive passenger plane that “crashed into mountainous terrain in a sparsely populated area of southwest Virginia.” The Annapolis Office of Emergency Management said in a statement posted to Twitter that the “boom that was heard across the DMV area was caused by an authorized DOD flight.”

The FAA later confirmed that the private passenger plane took off from Elizabethton Municipal Airport in Elizabethton, Tennessee, and was bound for Long Island MacArthur Airport in New York. The D.C. National Guard sent F-16s to intercept the plane after it didn’t respond to communication attempts, and the pilot was observed passed out in the cockpit prior to the plane crashing in Virginia. As of last night, the condition of that pilot is unknown.
