Top TipsPence officially declaresFormer Vice President Mike Pence officially filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission to run for president in 2024. The move pits Pence against former President Donald Trump, who is currently leading opinion polls for the Republican primary. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has the second-highest poll numbers, and Pence is currently sitting in third place. Before being tapped to be Trump’s vice president in the 2016 election, Pence served as Indiana governor and as a former U.S. congressman, including holding a position as the House Republican Conference chair. Pence joins a field of Republican candidates that includes former President Donald Trump, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, SC Senator Tim Scott, former AR Governor Asa Hutchinson, and biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy. Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is also expected to announce his Republican candidacy for president today in New Hampshire. |

SEC charges BinanceThe Securities and Exchange Commission filed a lawsuit against Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, and its founder Changpeng Zhao. In a press release, SEC chair Gary Gensler said, “Through thirteen charges, we allege that Zhao and Binance entities engaged in an extensive web of deception, conflicts of interest, lack of disclosure, and calculated evasion of the law.” Along with alleging that it commingled customers' funds, the SEC accused Binance of running an unregistered trading platform in the U.S. and allowing U.S. customers to trade digital currency on an exchange that’s supposed to be off-limits to U.S. investors. Yesterday’s charges are the latest actions regulators have taken against crypto companies. So far, the biggest target has been FTX, an exchange that collapsed in November 2022. FTX is currently facing a number of charges that threaten to send its founder and former CEO, Sam Bankman-Fried, to prison for over 100 years. |

FBI director in contemptAfter being briefed on and viewing a document alleging that President Biden was involved in a bribery scandal, House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer said he would hold FBI Director Christopher Wray in contempt of Congress. Comer previously said he would bring contempt charges against Wray for failing to deliver the subpoenaed document to Congress by May 30th. The revelations of the document–an FD-1023 form–came after Comer and Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley were approached by a whistleblower alleging that the FBI was in possession of a document that alleged Biden was involved in a $5M bribery scheme with a foreign national in exchange for influence over policy decisions during his time as vice president. The FD-1023 form in question is reportedly the write-up of an interview with an unverified source. FBI agents use FD-1023 forms to record unverified reporting from confidential sources, and the forms’ existence doesn’t mean the FBI considers them evidence of criminal behavior. |
