PGA & LIV Golf to merge

The PGA Tour, DP World Tour, and LIV Golf League have agreed to unify and merge their commercial operations into a single entity, per an announcement from the circuits.

The deal between the tours and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund–which owns LIV Golf–was reached without the knowledge of many PGA Tour members and LIV players and agents. In a statement, the PGA Tour said that the agreement combines all three circuits to form a “new, collectively owned, for-profit entity to ensure that all stakeholders benefit from a model that delivers maximum excitement and competition among the game’s best players.” PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan called yesterday “a historic day for the game we all know and love.”

The LIV Golf series launched in June 2022, with participating players such as Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson subsequently getting barred from competing in PGA Tour events. The circuits said the agreement ends all pending litigation between the parties.

World Bank outlook

The World Bank raised its global economic forecast for 2023 on the strength of the U.S., China, and other major economies, but said higher interest rates and tighter credit will take a bigger toll on next year’s results.

Per its report, the World Bank said it estimates that the international economy will expand by 2.1% in 2023 after growing by 3.1% in 2022. It also predicted that U.S. economic growth will slow to 1.1% growth in 2023, down from 2.1% in 2022. Meanwhile, it improved its outlook for the Russian economy this year due to stronger-than-expected revenues from energy exports to countries including India and China. Despite sanctions imposed by Western nations due to its war with Ukraine, the bank forecasts the Russian economy will contract “only slightly” in 2023.

Overall, the latest forecasts offers more promising economic outcomes as compared to its previous January predictions of the world's economy slowing to the brink of recession

SEC charges Coinbase

The Securities and Exchange Commission filed a lawsuit in New York federal court against cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase, alleging that the company was acting as an unregistered broker and exchange.

In a press release, the SEC wrote that it “alleges that Coinbase intertwines the traditional services of an exchange, broker, and clearing agency without having registered any of those functions with the Commission as required by law.” The SEC also alleged that Coinbase allowed users to trade tokens and buy products that were, in fact, securities. The SEC then named 13 digital tokens on Coinbase that it considered securities, including SOL, ADA, Matic, and FIL.

Coinbase is the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the United States. Yesterday’s charges against it come one day after the SEC filed a similar lawsuit against Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, and its founder Changpeng Zhao. Shares of Coinbase closed over 12% lower on the news.
