Top TipsPlane crash children foundFour Indigenous children were found alive by Colombian soldiers after surviving a plane crash and fending for themselves in the country’s Amazon jungle. The children’s mother and two pilots died when the small aircraft they were traveling in crashed in the jungle on May 1st. Members of the Colombian army discovered the bodies of the three adults at the crash site, but it appeared that the children escaped the wreckage and wandered into the rainforest. After 40 days, the four members of the Huitoto people were rescued about 3 miles away from the crash site in a small forest clearing after they were first found by one of the rescue dogs that soldiers took into the jungle. Per Colombian officials, the children–aged 13, 9, 4, and 11 months–survived by eating cassava flour and some of the rainforest’s fruits. They are expected to receive treatment at a hospital for a minimum of two weeks. |

I-95 overpass collapseAn overpass section of northbound I-95 in Northeast Philadelphia collapsed yesterday after a tanker truck caught fire underneath the highway. Philadelphia officials said the partial collapse of the overpass happened after the fire beneath it spread to the above lanes. Additionally, fluids leaking from the truck also triggered underground explosions. The collapse prompted the closure of all north and southbound lanes on I-19 for about three to four miles. City officials haven’t reported what caused the fire, though they said that the collapsed section of the freeway will take weeks, if not months, to repair. Interstate 95 runs north to south from the Canadian border in Maine to Miami, Florida. The NJ Department of Transportation said it is working with Pennsylvania officials to alleviate issues caused by the overpass collapse, and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said the collapse and resulting closure will have “serious ramifications” for travel in the region. |

Djokovic takes French OpenSerbian tennis player Novak Djokovic captured the 2023 French Open trophy by defeating Casper Ruud 7-6 (7-1), 6-3, 6-5 in the tournament’s final. After the match, Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal took to Twitter to congratulate Djokovic, saying, “Many congrats on this amazing achievement. Twenty-three is a number that just a few years back was impossible to think about, and you made it! Enjoy it with your family and team!” With yesterday’s victory, the 36-year-old Djokovic passed Nadal to break the record for most Grand Slams in the history of men’s tennis. Nadal has 22 Grand Slam titles, and Roger Federer follows with 20. Djokovic’s victory comes after he was prohibited from competing in a series of tournaments due to his Covid-19 vaccination status. In 2022, he was deported from Australia before the Australian Open and missed the US Open that same year due to both countries’ requirements for travelers to be vaccinated against the virus. |
