June 13th, 2023

Good morning, and happy Tuesday! Warmer weather is in full swing, which means the mosquitoes are back in action. It’s a mystery why some people get bitten more often than others, but did you know that some of it might be because of the soap they’re using in the shower? Apparently, new research found that certain soaps did, in fact, impact mosquitoes’ preferences. If you find yourself getting bitten, try switching out your soap and seeing if it helps!

JPMorgan Epstein settlement

JPMorgan has agreed to pay roughly $290M to settle a lawsuit brought on behalf of alleged victims of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, according to multiple reports.

The payment will go out to roughly 100 of Epstein’s victims, who had accused the bank of enabling sex trafficking by the deceased Epstein when he was a client. A joint statement from the nation’s largest bank and attorneys for the victims said they “have informed the court that they have reached an agreement in principle to settle the putative class action lawsuit related to Jeffrey Epstein’s crimes.” As part of the settlement, JPMorgan did not include an admission of liability.

In 2019, Epstein was found dead at the age of 66 in a prison cell. New York City's medical examiner ruled that he took his own life. To date, his estate has paid out more than $150M to more than 100 of his victims.

Nuggets are NBA champs

The Denver Nuggets are NBA champions for the first time in the franchise’s history after besting the Miami Heat in five games during this year’s NBA Finals.

The Nuggets clinched the title last night after defeating the Miami Heat with a final score of 94-89 in Game 5. Throughout the series, Denver ended three of their four victories with points in the double digits. History was made in the series when Jamal Murray and Nikola Jokic each recorded a 30-point triple-double in Game 3, something that had never been done before in any NBA Finals. Jokic–Denver’s 6’11” center from Serbia–received all votes for series MVP.

This year’s championship trophy is Denver’s only title since moving to the NBA in 1976. Denver’s title leaves Phoenix, Utah, Brooklyn, Orlando, Indiana, Charlotte, Memphis, Minnesota, New Orleans, and the Los Angeles Clippers as the 10 current franchises still waiting for a first NBA championship.

FTC files to block gaming deal

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) will file an injunction seeking to block Microsoft’s acquisition of video game company Activision Blizzard.

The FTC had previously filed a lawsuit in December 2022 seeking to block the deal, arguing that Microsoft's acquisition of the game studio would allow it to “suppress competitors to its Xbox gaming consoles and its rapidly growing subscription content,” adding that it could also restrict competition in its cloud-gaming operations. By filing for an injunction, the FTC is seeking to stop the transaction from going through before the deal’s July 18th deadline.

Microsoft announced its intention to buy Activision Blizzard–which is responsible for developing video game titles such as Call of Duty, Diablo, and World of Warcraft–early last year as a way to bolster its Xbox and PC gaming division. If the deal goes through, it will be the largest-ever merger in the video game industry.
