Trump arraigned again

Former President Trump was arraigned at a Miami federal courthouse yesterday and pleaded not guilty to 37 federal felony counts related to his alleged refusal to hand over classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago residence.

Yesterday’s charges are the first federal charges ever filed against a U.S. president, former or current. Special Counsel Jack Smith indicted Trump last week on 37 counts, including 31 counts of willful retention of national security records and six counts for allegedly obstructing the federal effort to recover those documents. Trump was booked alongside his co-defendant, longtime aide Walt Nauta.

This is the second time that Trump has appeared in court this year. The first was in April, following Manhattan D.A. Alvin Bragg’s investigation into Trump’s alleged role in a hush money payment made to Stormy Daniels (real name Stephanie Clifford) in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election. Trump pleaded not guilty to all 34 felony charges related to that case.

May inflation report

Inflation in the U.S. as measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose by 4% in May compared to last year and 0.1% from the month prior, per a report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

According to the Labor Bureau’s report, energy prices decreased by 11.7% year-over-year, while the index for food rose 6.7% from May 2022 levels. Other categories that saw price increases in the days between April and May were used cars and trucks (+4.4%), newspapers and magazines (+3.1%), and rent (+0.5%). “Core” inflation–which removes the food and energy components of the report–increased by 5.3% compared to the same period last year, and rose 0.4% in May after also rising 0.4% in April and March.

Last month’s 4% annualized rise in the CPI marks a decline of 3.1% from its November 2022 level, which saw an annualized increase of 7.1% from November 2021. Price categories that decreased in April are gasoline (-5.6%), airline fares (-3%), and sporting goods (-1.1%).

Golden Knights clinch Stanley Cup

The Vegas Golden Knights are Stanley Cup champions after beating the Florida Panthers with a final score of 9-3 in Game 5 of the Finals last night.

Vegas closed out the series in five games to clinch the title before a franchise-record crowd of 19,058 at T-Mobile Arena. During yesterday’s game, the team extended a one-goal game in the second period to lead 6-1. The nine goals the Golden Knights scored in Game 5 tied the record for the most in a Cup Final. Captain Mark Stone became the first player in a Stanley Cup Final to score three goals since Peter Forsberg did so in Game 2 of the 1996 Stanley Cup Final while playing for the Colorado Avalanche.

Yesterday’s victory is the Golden Knights’ first Stanley Cup title since joining the NHL in 2017. It is the city’s second title in nine months; the Aces claimed the WNBA championship in September 2022.
