Your Daily Brief

June 16th, 2023

Good morning, and happy Friday! Just a heads up that if you need to take your car into the shop soon, the work might take longer than usual. Apparently, there is a nationwide shortage of auto mechanics, which is causing a backlog in repairs. If the shortage keeps getting worse, people will have to wait even longer for service…so here’s hoping that doesn’t happen!

In Today’s Brief

  • Stockholm: Protestors target Monet painting
  • Denver: Two shot at Nuggets victory parade
  • Antonio Brown: Arena team booted from league
  • Cava: Mediterranean restaurant soars in IPO

Global cyberattack spree

Several U.S. government agencies were hit by a cyberattack that exploits software commonly used in both governments and companies across the globe, according to an announcement from government officials.

The U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency said several federal bodies “experienced intrusions” following the discovery of a weakness in the file transfer software MOVEit. The Russian cybercriminal gang Clop is reportedly responsible for the spree of attacks over the past few days, though no ransom demands have been made of federal agencies so far.

In addition to the U.S. government, a number of international firms have been affected by the attack, including Johns Hopkins University, British Airways, Ernst & Young, and more. Meanwhile, Progress Software, the U.S. firm that makes the MOVEit software that the hackers exploited, said it had discovered a second vulnerability in the code that it was working to fix.

More frozen strawberries recalled

Multiple brands of frozen strawberries and fruit products are being recalled after being linked to a Hepatitis A outbreak that has left nine people ill.

Per the FDA, the list of brands involved in the recall includes fruit products sold at Walmart, Costco, and HEB stores. According to FDA officials, the recall is “part of an ongoing investigation into a multistate outbreak of hepatitis A infections” that began in February 2023. The Hepatitis A virus strain discovered in patients who consumed the most recently recalled strawberries is reportedly identical to one that led to an outbreak in 2022 that was also linked to strawberries imported from Baja California in Mexico.

Per the FDA, Hepatitis A illness “usually occurs within 15 to 50 days after eating or drinking contaminated food or water,” and people may feel symptoms such as fatigue, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, jaundice, dark urine, and pale stool.

Alleged Pentagon leaker indicted

Alleged Pentagon leaker and former Air National Guardsman Jack Teixeira was indicted by a federal grand jury in Massachusetts yesterday.

Teixeira was accused of leaking dozens of intelligence documents to the online gaming service Discord. In a press release, the Department of Justice said that Teixeria was “indicted on six counts of willful retention and transmission of classified information relating to the national defense.” The leaked materials included revelations about the U.S. government’s relations with its adversaries and allies, such as its efforts to gather intelligence on Ukraine’s government, Russia, and allies such as Egypt, Israel, and South Korea.

The 21-year-old Teixeira enlisted in the Air National Guard in September 2019 and has been granted a Top Secret security clearance since 2021. He was arrested by FBI agents in April and faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250K for each count, according to the DOJ.
