The show, produced by Insomniac Events, had been taking place at The Gorge Amphitheatre in the city of George, roughly 150 miles east of Seattle. Authorities from the Grant County Sheriff’s Office reported that the incident occurred around 8:30 PM local time in the festival’s camping area, with the gunman firing randomly into the crowd. The suspect was reportedly shot in his confrontation with police and was taken into custody. As of last night, neither the names of the gunman nor the victims have been released. The festival continued on Saturday night despite the shooting, but Insomniac Events announced the cancellation of the day’s performances yesterday. Beyond Wonderland is one of Insomniac's flagship festival brands and is hosted annually at the Gorge Amphitheatre, along with other locations. |

Vietnam whistleblower diesDaniel Ellsberg, the whistleblower who exposed the extent of U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War, died at age 92 following a battle with pancreatic cancer, according to a statement from his family. Ellsberg was working as an analyst for the RAND Corporation in 1969 when he and his colleague Anthony Russo secretly photocopied a 7K-page study called the “Pentagon Papers,” which the Defense Department privately commissioned. The study revealed that the U.S. government knew early on that its forces could not prevail in the Vietnam War, which contradicted the government’s public statements. After Ellsberg took the study to the New York Times reporter Neil Sheehan, the revelations they contained helped bring an end to the conflict. The Pentagon Papers created a First Amendment clash between the Nixon administration and the New York Times, with government officials casting the reporting as an act of espionage. The Supreme Court ruled in favor of the freedom of the press. |
