Good morning, and happy Tuesday! In Italy, a fisherman recently caught a nine-pound catfish that is likely the largest such catch the world has ever seen. Allessandro Biancardi said the 330-pound fish he captured in the Po River was the result of 23 years of hard work, and he apparently beat the previous world record by over an inch. What we want to know is: how on earth does a catfish get that big? In Today’s Brief

Top TipsTitanic submarine tour missingA tourist submarine that takes passengers down to the bottom of the ocean to view the RMS Titanic shipwreck went missing on Sunday, prompting a search and rescue operation in the mid-Atlantic Ocean. The submarine belongs to OceanGate Expeditions, a company that provides crewed submersible services for exploration, industry, and research purposes. The U.S. Coast Guard is participating in the search and has reported that five people are aboard the vessel, including one crew member and four passengers. As of last night, an air search was underway and several ships were en route to the area to assist. In a tweet, the Coast Guard said that the crew of the Polar Prince–the ship that ferried it to the dive site–lost contact with the vessel “approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes” into its dive on Sunday. Per OceanGate’s website, the submersible that went missing has life support capabilities sufficient to sustain its five-person crew for 96 hours. |

Xi meets Blinken in ChinaSecretary of State Antony Blinken traveled to China and met with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang on the first visit to China by a U.S. secretary of state in five years. Biden and Xi last met on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Indonesia in November. While they pledged more frequent communication between the U.S. and China at that meeting, ties have since deteriorated. Per Blinken, he and Xi agreed to “stabilize” ties so that the two countries don’t veer into conflict. However, Blinken said the talks failed to produce any major breakthroughs and that his request for better communications between their militaries was rebuffed. Taiwan was reportedly a core issue during his meeting with Xi. Speaking to reporters during a press conference, Blinken said: “We do not support Taiwan independence. We remain opposed to any unilateral changes to the status quo by either side. We continue to expect the peaceful resolution of cross-strait differences.” |

Record commercial plane dealEuropean aircraft manufacturer Airbus secured a historic deal involving the most commercial jets ever purchased by a single airline. On the opening day of the Paris Airshow yesterday, the French-based Airbus announced an order for 500 of its A320 planes from Indian airline IndiGo. The two companies said it was the single biggest purchase agreement in commercial aviation history. The deal comes less than four months after rival carrier Air India ordered more than 470 jets from Airbus and Boeing to help it better serve the growing market for air travel within India. Airbus said it expects to deliver the aircraft from the IndiGo deal between 2030 and 2035. Founded in 2006, IndiGo is India’s top airline by market share, accounting for nearly 60% of the country’s domestic market. According to a June 1st report by Barclays, Indian carriers now have the second-largest order numbers with aircraft manufacturers, with an over 6% share of the industry backlog. Note: Our third headline yesterday mistakenly read, “Rickie Fowler takes US Open.” Wyndham Clark is the 2023 U.S. Open champion, not Rickie Fowler, which the body of our story reflected. |
