Missing sub crew declared dead

OceanGate, the company behind the submersible trip to the RMS Titanic wreck, said that the five people who were aboard the sub that went missing on Sunday did not survive.

The U.S. Coast Guard said the sub experienced a “catastrophic loss” of the pressure chamber, and confirmed that the debris field found on the sea floor earlier in the day was pieces of the missing sub. The Coast Guard made the announcement hours after they alerted the public that a robotic vehicle made the discovery. The Titan submersible lost contact with its surface vessel, the Polar Prince, around one hour and 45 minutes into its dive Sunday morning, about 900 miles east of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and around 400 miles southeast of St John’s, in Canada's Newfoundland.

The five passengers aboard the vessel included OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, British entrepreneur Hamish Harding, deep sea explorer Paul-Henri Nargeolet, Pakistani magnate Shahzada Dawood, and his 19-year-old son Suleman.

Biden meets Modi

President Biden yesterday met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the White House for the third state visit of his presidency.

During a joint press conference after their meeting, Biden said that “Indian firms are announcing more than $2B in new investments in manufacturing,” and pointed to “solar in Colorado, steel in Ohio, and optic fiber in South Carolina.” Biden and Modi also announced a deal for General Electric to build military jet engines in India with state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics as part of the defense partnership between the two countries. The agreement is still subject to congressional review.

Modi is known for not participating in news conferences and typically doesn’t field questions from the press. Press freedom groups claim that he has overseen a crackdown on reporting, and he has faced recent criticism over legislation amending the country’s citizenship law that fast-tracks naturalization for some migrants but excludes Muslims.

Stonehenge of the Netherlands

A 4K-year-old religious burial ground that is 65 feet in diameter was uncovered by archaeologists this week in the Netherlands, who nicknamed it “the Stonehenge of the Netherlands.”

The mound reportedly contains the remains of around 60 men, women, and children, and was configured so that the sun would shine directly through on the winter and summer solstices. After six years of digging, it was uncovered in the town of Tiel, which is 45 miles east of Rotterdam. In a statement, the town said: “The largest mound served as a sun calendar, similar to the famous stones of Stonehenge in England.”

The site is one of the largest ever uncovered in the Netherlands and was discovered in November 2016 during construction at an industrial area called the Medel business park. Archaeologists excavated more than 1M objects from the site, including human and animal skulls, and valuables such as bronze spearheads.

Harvard & mushrooms

Harvard’s nutrition website tells us something hugely important: Studies have shown that mushrooms contain substances renowned for their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer effects.

One study conducted by researchers in Australia showed that women who ate just 10 grams of button mushrooms per day (that’s a few slices) were about two-thirds less likely to develop breast cancer than women who ate no mushrooms.

We’re just discovering all the incredible ways in which mushrooms are at the forefront of everything from medicine to mental health to planetary survival.
